Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Beppu trip

Hello, I think It was Daniel that kindly helped me a lot a while back with my itinerary but I can't seem to find the responses. :(

Would it be possible to see if this itinerary is feasible and (all) doable via the Japan Rail pass? Are there any other spots like Beppu that may be a challenge getting to? Lastly, are there evening trains to most of the destinations?

I hope I've planned enough time for the different cities to be able to see a little bit of the culture during that time. Are there any spots that it may be recommend to cut down on and add in somewhere else?

Thank you for any help on the below.

Hi Bunni,

I looked for your previous post myself but could not find it - we generally don't remove posts from the forum - so it's still somewhere out there :)

I checked your itinerary and although it looks busy I think that it works out quite well. The leg which will take up the most time is Beppu - Tokyo which is a good 442 Minutes. This also brings me to your question about evening train. Trains in Japan as a general rule suspend service around midnight. In other words, the last train will arrive around midnight and you have to board it earlier depending on your travel time. For example Tokyo - Kyoto takes about 140 minutes so the last train departs around 21:30. This is only a general rule, so please check actual travel times before departure.

As for the rest, exploring Kyushu is amazing, personally I think it is the best part of Japan (I seem to recall writing this before, maybe your previous post?). Something you could do to alleviate the long trip Beppu - Tokyo would be to re-schedule your visit to Hiroshima after visiting Beppu and visit Nagasaki directly after Kyoto.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel, thank you so much again! I tried so many searches yesterday for the old post and could not seem to locate it. I will keep on checking though.

The Beppu leg could be removed completely. I was looking for something somewhere in between Nagasaki and Tokyo to break up the trip a little so it's not so long on the train. Not sure what is mid-way? I just looked at the map and didn't realize Beppu was that close to Nagasaki. I thought it was higher up.

The trip will look more like this:
3 1/2 days in Tokyo
1 Mt Fuji
1 in Osaka
2 1/2 in Kyoto
2 in Hiroshima
2 in Nagasaki
Then comes the way back segment

Do you recommend 2 in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Thanks again for all of the help! It is greatly appreciated.

Hi Bunni,

The only thing Hiroshima and Nagasaki really share is the 2nd world war devastation. Both cities are very unique and well worth visiting. Nagasaki especially has a lot of history, it you may know for over a 100 years it was the only port used for trading with the rest of the world.

As for a stop over, there's a couple of options, two places especially come to mind. The first is Kobe and the other is Nagoya both places are directly on route to Tokyo and have lot's to offer. Personally I would be a little be biased and stay in Kobe but I'd recommend reading a little bit about both and decide yourself.

I hope this helps too!

Hi Daniel, this helps a ton!! Many thanks!!

For Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this is what I had mapped out for seeing:

Hiroshima Peace Memorial
Peace Memorial Park
Peace Memorial Hall
Maybe Itsukushima Island

Atomic Bomb Museum
Nagasaki Peace Park
Mt Inasa
Chinatown

I would start early, maybe 8 am. Some may not open until later but I could look around for a bit in the meantime. Would you recommend only a day in each?

I've added on Kobe and Nagoya as the stopover. I could also try to fly out of Nagoya as well which may help with travel time a bit. Would have loved to have started the journey in Sapporo and gone all the way to the bottom.

Thanks again so much,
Bunni

Hi Bunni,

Looks like a plan, I would certainly add Itsukushima (Miyajima) to your travel.
As for Nagasaki, consider a visit to Dejima I thought it was pretty interesting when I visited it.

I think one to one and a half day should to enough to see your planned visits in Hiroshima. I would reserve 2 days for Nagasaki if you can.

Let me know if you have any more questions,
Daniel

Thank you, Daniel! I will schedule the days as you mentioned and I've decided to plan a day for train travel from Nagasaki to Tokyo. Would all of the routes above be covered by the JR Rail pass? I am looking into the 14 day one.

Also, does it cover other train lines? As an example, I was looking to go to these spots in Tokyo and have not mapped out transport yet. Are there any unforeseen things that may not be covered by the pass?

Tokyo Tower
Tokyo Sky Tree
Tokyo Imperial Palace
Rainbow Bridge
Harijuku
Shinjuku Gyoen
Budokan
Roppongi Hills
Mt. Fuji

Thank you so much!

I was just reading that there is a separate Metro pass for the cities. Is that correct?

I think I've finalized the trip. Hope this looks ok time wise. :)

Fly into Tokyo, arrive 6pm
Spend 3 full days there.
Go in the morning to Mt Fuji/spend the night
Spend the morning at Mt Fuji - travel to Osaka/spend night
Day in Osaka - travel to Kyoto mid-day/Kyoto night
Full day in Kyoto/night
Full day in Kyoto/night
Half day Kyoto - Travel to Hiroshima/night in Hiroshima
Full day in Hiroshima - travel to Nagasaki
Full day in Nagasaki/night
Travel day to Tokyo/night
Fly out

Hi Bunni,

I checked the route for you and all routes are covered, the only part which may require a small extra charge is Fuji but this depends on where exactly around Fuji you plan to visit.

Also all places in Tokyo are pretty close to JR stations and well within walkable distance. The only exception is the Tokyo Sky Tree. (see link for details).

It also looks fine time wise! Travel to Tokyo will take a good amount but not the entire day. It would be easy to make a stop on the route for a couple of hours and enjoy a little more of Japan before you go home :)

Have a great trip!
Daniel

There's a metro pass available in most cities, for instance the one in Tokyo is 710yen for a day and allows for unlimited travel. You'd need to do 4-5 trips for it to pay off.

All of that is greatly, greatly appreciated. Thank you heaps! I found something online where you can get a full day courtesy pass for Tokyo and surrounding for tourists. Japan really goes out of their way to help people visiting the country. I haven't seen any other place in the world (so far) that does that! :)

Around Mt Fuji, I was trying to find the best view and read about Hakone. There is a beautiful spot next to a pagoda or hotel on a hill that I'd like to find. It is in most of the travel photos online. Also, I would like to see the old abandoned amusement part called Gulliver's Kingdom but am not sure if it's far from Hakone.

Thank again!!
Bunni
