Hi,

Am planning a trip to Tokyo and its surrounding area for my family (2 adults + 2 kids). I would like to seek advice 1) on my itinerary and 2) if getting a 7-Day or 14-Day JR Pass would be worth while. This is just the suggested route and could be adjusted accordingly.

My suggested itinerary as follows:

Day 1:
Arrive at Tokyo (Narita) in the morning > Head to Kusatsu Onsen (spend the night there).

Day 2:
Kusatsu Onsen > Nagano (via Karuizawa)

Day 3
Nagano > Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route > Toyama (stay for 1 night)

Day 4
Toyama > Kanzawa (stay for 1 night)

Day 5 and 6
Kanazawa > Shirakawa-go > Takayama (Stay for 2 nights)(Nohi Bus)

Day 7
Takayama to Nagoya (stay for 1 night)

Day 8 and 9
Nagoya to Hakone

Day 10
Head to Tokyo (visit Ginza, Shinjuku and other shopping areas)

Day 11
Head to Tsukiji Market / Yokohama

Day 12
Head to Disneyland Sea

Day 13
Departing at Tokyo (Haneda)

Is a 14-Day or 7-Day JR Pass better to fit into my itinerary? If I were to get a 7 day JR pass, which day should I start the activation?

Hi there,

You could consider a 7 day JR Pass for the following section of the itinerary.

Narita Airport - KusatsuOnsen ¥ 10,570
Kusatsu - Nagano ¥ 6,460
Nagano - Shinano-Omachi for start Alpine route ¥ 3,640
Toyama - Kanazawa ¥ 3,330
Takayama - Nagoya ¥ 6,030

For a total of ¥ 30,030, while the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. It would also be very convenient for this part as you will have a single ticket (the JRPass) for these 7 days.

The route itself looks good and I think you planned it well!

Hi Daniel-san,

Need your advise again. Given the FX changes and some tweaks to the itinerary, like to see if your original recommendation still stands.

Now my suggested itinerary in late May 2016 as follows:

Day 1:
Arrive at Tokyo (Narita) in the morning > Head to Kusatsu Onsen (spend the night there).

Day 2:
Kusatsu Onsen > Matsumoto (via Karuizawa)

Day 3:
Matsumoto > Kamikochi > Matsumoto

Day 4:
Matsumoto > Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route > Unazuki Onsen (stay for 1 night)

Day 5:
Unazuki Onsen > Kurobe Gorge Railway > Unazuki Onsen > Kanzawa (stay for 1 night)

Day 6 and 7
Kanazawa > Shirakawa-go > Takayama (Stay for 2 nights)(Nohi Bus)

Day 8:
Takayama to Nagoya (stay for 1 night)

Day 9 and 10
Nagoya to Hakone

Day 11
Head to Tokyo (visit Ginza, Shinjuku and other shopping areas)

Day 12
Head to Tsukiji Market / Yokohama

Day 13
Head to Disneyland Sea

Day 14
Departing at Tokyo (Haneda)

Hi again!

I see that you've taking a bit more time to explore the Japanese Alps.

However now it would be hard to match a JR Pass to your travels and my advise here would be to buy normal tickets as you travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
