Going to Japan for appx. 2 1/2 weeks. Arriving in Haneda, staying in Tokyo 7 or 8 days and then traveling to Kyoto and Osaka for the rest of the trip and then leaving back to Tokyo and flying out of Haneda again. Should I get a 7 day JR pass for the Kyoto/Osaka portion of the trip or is it worth it to get a 14 day pass to include rail when we are in Tokyo? Thanks!
Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Tokyo
Hi,
A JR Pass is best for long distance travel. With your plans listed above a 14 day pass would not pay off. If you can go from Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka/Nara and back within 7 days though, a 7 day pass would almost pay off. The difference you can easily cover with a side trip from Osaka to Himeji for example, which has Japan's finest castle, or use one day for a day trip from Tokyo to someplace like Nikko.
While in the Tokyo area, you can get a 3 day subway pass, and taking a day trip to Hakone and Kamakura/Enoshima would be well worth it too.
Good luck.
Thank you very much!
