Hi there!

My 2 friends and I will be travelling to Japan this December for the first time, for 2 weeks. Needless to say, we are very overwhelmed with everything there is to see and do!

I was hoping I could get some advice on what the most cost efficient method of travel would be, considering our plans :)

Week 1: Tokyo - land in Haneda Airport
We will be staying in Shinjuku and travelling around. e.g.Shibuya, Akihabara, Asakusa, Shiodome. We want to cover as much ground as possible during this week, and plan to be using the train lines 2-3 times a day.

Week 2: Tokyo to Kyoto-Osaka
We have decided to take the bullet train to Kyoto, and will be staying there for 5 days. We would like to travel to osaka once (from Kyoto) for a day trip.

We will then be travelling back from Kyoto to Tokyo to fly home :(

We are overwhelmed by the number of travel packages offered, and are considering purchasing the 14 day Japan Rail pass, if it is more cost efficient that way.

Thank you :)

Howdy!

To keep it simple stick to the 7 day JR pass. You could make some good savings by using it for travel between Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo. The 7 day JR pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto on the Shinkansen. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price :)

As for Tokyo, just buy a Suica card. This is a prepaid travel card and will make getting around Kyoto very easy :)

More about Suica can be found here:

Let me know if you have any more questions!
