Hi,

I just wanted to check my itinerary with you and see if you think it is ok or if you would advise any changes.

I will be going to Japan from 8-22nd March 2016 and I'm thinking of getting the 7 or 14 day JR pass. Which one would you think is the best value based on the following itinerary?

8th March - Arrive in Narita airport, Tokyo
8th-12th March - Tokyo (sightseeing, Disneyland etc)
13th - Day trip to Mt Fuji from Tokyo (Do you recommend doing a day trip to Mt Fuji or go straight to Hakone from there? Also do you have any recommended tours to go to Mt Fuji or is it easy enough to get there by ourselves?)
14th-15th March - Hakone
16-18th March - Kyoto
I also want to go to Nara but not sure whether to go to Nara from Kyoto or Osaka? Which one would be more convenient?
18-22nd March Osaka

If i used the 7 day JR pass and activated it on the 13th or 14th when I leave Tokyo would that be a good idea?

Also what's the best way to get from narita airport to central Tokyo? Is there a direct train?

Hi there,

To start with the JR Pass, will you be going back to Tokyo/Narita after Osaka or fly from there? This make a big difference whether a JR Pass will give you good value.

For Fuji, I recommend visiting it on your own instead of taking a tour. There is plenty to see and do and while access requires a bit of research in advance, it is well worth it. Also see our blog post on Fuji.

Osaka and Kyoto both have easy access to Nara but Kyoto is easiest.

You can use the Narita Express directly from Narita Airport to Tokyo and back.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for the information Daniel.

No I will be flying out from Osaka. Do you still think the JR pass is good value?

Will it make sense to go from mt Fuji to hakone rather than Tokyo to hakone? How long will it take to travel from mt Fuji to hakone and how long will it take?

Is the narita express covered with the JR pass?

Hi again,

Since you are flying out of Osaka, I would advise buying normal tickets for your trip. This because normal tickets will cost less than the cost of a JR Pass for this travel plan.

Mt. Fuji is quite a large area, its hard to say exactly how long it takes. You could also just visit Hakone if your main purpose is the view Fuji, there are many wonderful views from there.

The Narita Express is covered by the JR Pass.
