suggestions to travel from Mt. Koya to Karatsu

I would like to travel from Mt Koyasan to Karatsu to see the Hikiyama festival on Nov 1, 2014. Any suggestions how to travel this distance? I am afraid to miss connections, does it make sense to make reservations in advance? I am assuming I just show my rail pass, I do not need to buy individual tickets (unless I use non JP rail transportation). I am thinking to by the first class (green) JP rail pass for 14 days. How do I make reservations? Do I need to be in Japan or is it possible to reserve before reaching Japan (book online)?

Thanks,
E. David

Hello E. David,

It's quite a trip between Koya (Gokurabashi station) and Karatsu. Here is route in Hyperdia. There's enough time between transfers, so you don't have to worry about missing your train.

You can make reservations once you are in Japan at any station. Just go to the ticket window and show your JR Pass. The JR pass will then find the best route for you and print the tickets.

A Green pass could be worth it as you'll be spending a good amount of travel in the train and this way you'll be able to travel in extra comfort and quiet, do remember that all green seats are all reserved and you'll have to get tickets in advance.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
