Dear sirs,

I am planning my 2 weeks itinerary in Japan in April. It's the first time I visit your country and I'd like my visit to be as diverse as possible, also I've got a couple of nights to fill in between Miyajima and going back to Tokyo.

My itinerary so far is as follows:

SATURDAY 4 - Land In Tokyo
SUNDAY 5- MONDAY 6 - TOKYO
TUESDAY 7- Tokyo-Osaka
WEDNESDAY 8 - Osaka- Nara-Osaka
THURSDAY 9 Osaka-Kyoto-Osaka
FRIDAY 10-Osaka-Kyoto-Osaka
SATURDAY 11- Osaka-Hiroshima-Miyajima
SUNDAY 12
MONDAY 13
THURSDAY 14 Sleeping in Tokyo
WEDNESDAY 15 - FRIDAY 17 Tokyo
SAT 18 Flight Back

1-I booked 4 nights in Osaka because accommodation was nearly fully booked in Kyoto. I am planning to do two day trips from Osaka to Kyoto.Would that be enough? or do you recommend to use Osaka as a base to do day trips to other places, and fill the nights for 12 and 13 going to Kyoto.

2- I was planning to go to KoyaSan, but most people say that in the first half of April it will be cold and not that impressive and also I cannot find any accommodation available for those days. Would a day trip from Osaka be enough to visit it? Or do you recommend me to skip it completely and visit somewhere else?

3-Which suggestions can you give me to fill those 2 nights/3 days in between Miyajima and Tokyo? I was also thinking on Naoshima, or some place with hot springs and Onsen. Or maybe Kiso Valley if its not too out of the way?

4- I am also thinking on one or two day trips from Tokyo to Mt Fuji or Nikko, anywhere else you can recommend?

My bookings can be cancelled. So if you can think of anything I am not doing right, I can still try and follow any advice you have.

Thanks very much for your help.
Look forward to your suggestions.

Kind regards,

Roberto Gonzalez

Forgot to ask. I am planning to get a JR Pass and travel everywhere with it. Would you recommend me to get the 14 days or the 7 days would be enough for me? Also, is there any of those places that I won't be able to reach by using the pass?

Thanks again.

Kind regards,

Roberto

Hi,
Some suggestions....you didn't list Nara at all in your itinerary - it is a must see place. Himeji also makes a great day trip, and I think that going to Koyasan is a marvelous idea. And if you want to see the mecca of cherry blossoms, it would be Mt. Yoshino in Nara Prefecture:

You could also go beyond Miyajima just a bit and see Iwakuni - it also is very good for cherry blossoms and a lot fewer crowds:

Konpirasan is Kotohira, Kagawa, is also a nice off the beaten path location:

Kiso Valley is nice also, but you need transport - some bring or rent a bicycle. Some other ideas are Kurashiki, Onomichi, and Okayama (the Korakuen Garden is famous):

For the Tokyo area, some good day trips include Nikko, Kamakura, and Hakone.

Still have a couple of doubts.

a) Can you visit Koyasan from Osaka o Kyoto, just on a day trip, without sleeping there? Is it worth it?
b) I have Nara as a day trip from Osaka, any other day trips from Osaka you can recommend?
c)Booked provisionally Sunday 12 and 13 in Kyoto, but willing to change to other places if I can find alternative options.

Kind regards and thanks for all your help.

Hello there,

1.) Yes Koyasan is easy to visit as day trip from Osaka/Kyoto and there are great hikes to be made around the area. Though the real experience is staying the night as well.

2.) Kobe comes to mind right away, the city is great to visit. There are so many small sightseeing spots and places worth to visit. Feel Kobe is a great website with all things listed for Kobe. An other day trip to could consider is Shirahama for it's rock formations and outdoor Onsen.

3.) Kyoto is great! Keep the reservations :)

Also reading your earlier questions: Which suggestions can you give me to fill those 2 nights/3 days in between Miyajima and Tokyo? I was also thinking on Naoshima, or some place with hot springs and Onsen. Or maybe Kiso Valley if its not too out of the way?

Naoshima is definitely a stop I would recommend and a great experience to have. Cycling around the island is a great way to spend the day. An other stop worth considering is Hakone, there's much to do in the area and the view of Fuji can be breathtaking on a clear day.

  • I am also thinking on one or two day trips from Tokyo to Mt Fuji or Nikko, anywhere else you can recommend?* Nikko is amazing, if you wish to make any other side trips, Kamakura, Yokohama and Kawagoe make for good day trips.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
