We are coming to Japan in March with the following itinerary, please advise what is best option for train tickets.

Arrive Osaka 14/3, based there until 20/3 local travel to Kyoto and Nara region
20/3 hiring car to travel to Tottori
23/3 travel Osaka to Hiroshima
24-25/3 Hiroshima area
25/3 travel Hiroshima to Tokyo
26-29 travel Tokyo area

Thoughts are 7 day pass 23/3 to 29/3 and pay locally from 14/3-20/3 in Osaka, possibly with icoca pass.

Is this our best option? Does JR pass allow bullet train access for long trips?

Hi there,

You could consider 7 day JR Pass for Osaka - Hiroshima - Tokyo. The JR Pass covers the bullet trains between these places.

In terms of ticket prices.

Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 10,230
Hiroshima - ¥ 18,560

For a total of ¥ 28,790 while the 7 day JR Pass is 29,110. The difference is price is really small so far, however the JR Pass will also allow for local travel in Tokyo, you will also be able to use it to travel back to the Airport. Additionally it covers the ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima and you can use the Hiroshima Sightseeing bus without additional charge. So all together you'll be able to get good value out of the pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
