Should I purchase JR Pass

I will be traveling to Osaka on 6 Feb to 13 Feb 2013 and would like your advice whether I should purchase JR Pass.

Taking Osaka as my base for the 8 days trip:

6 Feb : Arrived in KIX at 9pm and heading to the hotel at Shinsaibashi.
7 Feb : Heading to Kyoto and return to Osaka.
8 Feb : Heading to Arashiyama and return to Osaka.
9 Feb : Heading to Mount Koya and back to Osaka
10 Feb : Heading to Nara and back to Osaka
11 & 12 Feb : Heading to Universal Studio, Umeda, Shinsekai etc
13 Feb : Depart from KIX at 9am

Thank you.

Hi Shjam,

The JR-Pass is great if you plan on traveling longer distances.
Since your all of your travel will be local in the Kansai Area I would not recommend it.

What may be of use is the Kansai Area pass you can also use it on the Haruka express from Kansai Airport to Osaka and to Kyoto if you like.

Hope this helps,
-Daniel

Thank you Daniel... 2 questions.

  1. If I purchase the Kansai Area Pass, can i travel to and fro Kyoto for 2 days? Meaning on the first day I will travel to Kyoto and returns to Osaka and then the next day I travel to Kyoto again. Can this pass covers both trip?

  2. Can I use the pass to travel to Mount Koya?

Hi again,

1.) Yes you can do this! please note however that this pass is relatively expansive and if you buy single tickets it is a lot cheaper. For example the pass is 2000Yen a day or 1500Yen a day if you buy the 4 day version. A single trip Osaka Kyoto is only about 500 Yen.

2.) Mount Koya is served by a different company (kintetsu) than JR, so JR passes don't cover it :(

Hope this helps,
-Daniel
