Should I get a JR pass, & can I use it to all types of rail travel?

Hello JR team!

I am traveling to Japan in January 2015 and am not sure if I should get a 7 or 14 day JR pass, or one at all.
Does it work out cheaper if I get a pass or if I buy individual train tickets at each station?

5-11 January - Tokyo (including day trip to DisneySea and Mt Fuji)
12-14 January - Kyoto
15-19 January - Osaka

Can the JR pass be used to travel within Tokyo (e.g. to and from Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku)?

I have heard that Mt Fuji will be hard to see in January, where do you suggest we visit in order to get a good view of Mt Fuji?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi there,

I would advise buying normal tickets for this trip. A 7 day JR Pass would have made for a good option, if you made a return Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka. For one way it is more economic to buy normal tickets.

The JR Pass is valid in Tokyo and can be used to see most of the city, including Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku.

It is true that Fuji is harder to view in the winter. This is mostly due to the weather and some luck is required. The place does not really matter but Kawaguchiko and Hakone make for great viewing places and offer other interesting things to do and see as well, just in case Fuji is not visible.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
