Daniel san,

My partner and I will be visiting Japan as follows:
We fly into Tokyo and fly out from Nagoya.
3rd - 8th Oct Tokyo (5 nights)
8th - 9th Oct Mt. Fuji (1 night)
9th - 13th Oct Kyoto (4 nights)
13th - 16th Oct Gifa/Takayama/Gassho Village (3 nights)
16th - 17th Oct Nagoya (1 night)

My questions:
13th - 16th Oct Gifa/Takayama/Gassho Village (we plan to stay 3 nights in this region):
1. Is 3 nights in this region sufficient?
2. We are not sure which village/town to stay or should we stay in Kyoto and travel to Gifa?
3. Or stay at Gifa and travel to Takayama/Gassho Village?
4. Besides the architectural aspect of the villages/towns what other attractions are there in this area/region?

Please advice. Thank you.

Lillian

Hello Lillian,

I like your itinerary! There's a nice balance between the most famous places to visit in Japan and some more remote places. I assume that with Gifa you mean Gifu? In any event, one night in each place should be enough to give you a good impression of each place. If you have more time, I would also recommend a visit to Kanazawa in the same area (or as alternative to visiting Gifu).

2 & 3.) Takayama is a nice place to stay, so is Kanazawa or you could just stay at Gifu city. All option work!

4.) There's a lot! For instance you could visit a an Onsen near Takayama both Gero Onsen and Okuhida are great places to visit.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Yes you are right. I meant Gifu.

Thank you so much for your advice on a visit to Kanazawa. We will definitely do our homework on this area.

Thanks!

Lillian

Hi Daniel-san,

Now our itinerary (15days-14nights) is finalised as follows:
3/10-8/10 Fly into Tokyo stay 5 nights. Visit - Tsukiji market, Asakusa, Sensoji, Imperial Palace, Karajuku etc
8/10-9/10 Mt. Fuji (1 night) - 5 Lakes area?
9/10-13/10 Kyoto (5 nights) - Kyomizudera, Kinkakuji, Gion, Nishiki Market, day trips to Osaka (Namba shopping area, Shinsekai area)
13/10-15/10 Kanazawa (2 nights) - Kenroku-en, Higashichaya, Suzuki Museum, Shirakawa-go, Gokyama
15/10-16/10 Takayama (1 night) - Hida Miuzoka Mura Folk Village, Sanmachi Suji, Gero Onsen,
16/10-17/10 Nagoya (1 night) - a bit of sight seeing and fly home.

Questions:
1. Kyoto/Osaka - is it better to do day trips to Osaka from Kyoto or to spend 1 or 2 nights in Osaka? Is the rail tickets on Kyoto-Osaka-Kyoto route expensive?
2. Gasshio Villages of Shirakawa-go & Gokyama - Do we visit the villages during our stay in Kanazawa or during our stay Takayama?
3. Gasshio Villages - is it necessary to visit both the villages or just see one will do? If we need to see one only, which one would you recommend?
4. Nagoya - anything interesting to do/see/visit before we fly home?

Looking forward to your comments!

Thank you Daniel-san

Hi Again!

1.) You could stay in either Osaka or Kyoto both cities are very close and hopping over only takes 30 minutes. A one way ticket is 560yen.

2 and 3.) I would stick to Shirakawago, I found it to be the most beautiful places in the area and the traditional houses are basically the same compared to the other nearby places.

4.) Nagoya tower is nice to go up in after nightfall. I also like going shopping in Nagoya, there are a lot of small shopping arcades with an atmosphere only found in Nagoya. There's also the JR Trains museum if you are into trains, they have a Maglev system. You could also visit Nagoya castle if you have't visited an other Japanese castle.

Hope this helps!
