Hi..need your opinion on my travel plan in Japan whether JR Pass is worth:

24/12: Reach Kansai Airport, proceed to Namba area (Is JR pass covers?)
25/12: Day trip from Osaka to Kobe
26/12: Osaka to Takayama
27/12: Visit Shirakawago (is there any night light up event on tat day? )
28/12: Visit Kanazawa and Japan Alps
29/12: Takayama back to Osaka
30/12: In Osaka city only
31/12: Back to Kansai

Can you please help me to see whether my itinerary is worth to go for 7Days National Pass or regional pass is good enough please? And at the same time which are the days mentioned above the JR Pass can be used please?

Thank you very much

Regards
Jason

Hello Jason,

Whether a JR Pass is useful would depend on your visit to Kanazawa and how you plan to travel there. Will you be going there as a day trip from Kanazawa? In that case it would make sense economically speaking to get a JR Pass.

At the same time, visiting Kanazawa as a day trip may not be the more efficient of routes. A popular route is to travel in a circle, think Osaka - Takayama - Kanazawa - Osaka, as there is not backtracking here. Though it would also mean that you will not make savings wit the JR Pass on this route.

The JR Pass does also cover travel to JR-Namba station from Kansai Airport.

As alternative, consider looking at a Hokuriku area pass. This however does not cover the route directly from Osaka to Takayama via Nagoya. Instead you'd have to travel via Kanazawa and Shirakawago.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Dear Daniel

Thank you so much for the reply. It is very useful.

Initially was just thinking of doing a day trip from Takayama to Kanazawa.
However, if I do not include Kanazawa in my trip, does that mean getting hokuriku pass will be much more economical please?

Between, I try to search online about the shirakawa light up event..but looks like there is no available date for that event during my stay in Japan.

Thank you

Regards
Jason

Hi Jason,

If you just do Takayama and Shirakawago, then the best option would simply be to buy normal tickets. Simply because the Hokuriku pass adds to much additional travel that it would not be practical.

The Shirakawago light up is hard to access, as there usually are no buses traveling anymore that late. So you either have to stay the night, or rent a car yourself. Still Shirakawago is a very beautiful visit by day as well.

Dear Daniel

Thank you for the quick response! Appreciate that!

Ok will not get the pass then. Will just do Takayama and Shirakawa go in depth then.

One more last question: I wanted to get the Universal studio advance ticket here in Malaysia from the dealer tour agent..but temporarily out of stock till next year. Do you have any idea where I can get the tickets in advance please?

Thank you

Regards
Jason

Dear Daniel

Thank you again for ur reply.. I have checked the website but advance tickets can only buy from the designated tour agents according to countries or go to the booth on that day itself to get the ticket.

I was wondering to get the advance ticket first before arriving at Japan.. So any other ways I can do that please?

Thank you

Jason

Hi Jason,

I don't have any experience buying these tickets online myself.

Maybe you could call the travel agency and ask if they can book it manually for you?

Sorry that I can't be of more help here.
