Hi Daniel-san,

I was just wondering whether you could help me with my itinerary. I have booked three nights accommodation in Osaka (09-12/09/14) and then in Kyoto (14/09). I am planning to visit Hiroshima, Nara and Koyasan in between. I would like to stay one night in a temple while in Koyasan. Could you help me to order the trips to Hiroshima, Nara and Koyasan and also advise where to stay (not actual hotel, just a city ;-) to make the most of the trip?

09/09/14 Explore Osaka – stay in Osaka
10/09/14 Explore Osaka – stay in Osaka
11/09/14 Daytrip to Hiroshima – stay in Osaka
12/09/14 In the morning trip to Nara – stay in Nara or go back to Osaka?
13/09/14 Go to Koyasan in the afternoon/evening - stay in Koyasan (shukubō)
14/09/14 Koyasan -> travel to Kyoto in the evening - stay in Kyoto

Thank you for your help, much appreciated!

Tom

Hi Tom,

Of course, I'd be more than happy to help!

The order in which you visit Nara, Hiroshima and Koyasan does not really matter, since most of your visits are day trips.
I would recommend visiting Nara as a day trip, the city is very beautiful but it can be seen in a day.

As for travel to Koyasan, I would advise travelling there from Osaka, as it's easier to get there. However it's not a big problem if you go there from Kyoto (it adds about 1H of travel time).

For places to stay, it would be worth it to stay in Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima for the night. As all cities have a nice night-life, which is worth experiencing for sure. If you stay in Osaka, try to stay near Namba/Shinsaibashi. This is the best area if you ask me. In Kyoto I would stay near Kawaramachi/Shichijou/Goin and in Hiroshima in the city centre.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your help. So I have made this itinerary:

10/09/14 Osaka (Sleep: Osaka)
11/09/14 Daytrip to Nara (Sleep: Osaka)
12/09/14 Daytrip to Hiroshima (Sleep: Osaka)
13/09/14 Koyasan (Sleep: Koyasan)
14/09/14 Koyasan/Kyoto (Sleep: Koyto)
15/09/14 Kyoto (Sleep: Koyto)
16/09/14 Kyoto (Sleep: Koyto)
17/09/14 ? (Sleep: ?)
18/09/14 Tokyo (Sleep: Tokyo)
19/09/14 Tokyo (Sleep: Tokyo)
20/09/14 Daytrip to Kamakura (Sleep: Tokyo)
21/09/14 Tokyo or daytrip to Nikko? (Sleep: Tokyo)
22/09/14 Tokyo/Osaka (Late night flight froom Osaka)

The only missing piece of the puzzle is on 17/09/14. Where would you recommend to go? What would be good to fill the void in terms of interestingness/travel between Kyoto and Tokyo?

Second question - what pass would you recommend to purchase?

Thank you again for your help, very much appreciated!

P.S. The last day we would like to visit Hakone on our way from Tokyo to Osaka, so the whole itinerary looks like this:

10/09/14 Osaka (Sleep: Osaka)
11/09/14 Daytrip to Nara (Sleep: Osaka)
12/09/14 Daytrip to Hiroshima (Sleep: Osaka)
13/09/14 Koyasan (Sleep: Koyasan)
14/09/14 Koyasan/Kyoto (Sleep: Koyto)
15/09/14 Kyoto (Sleep: Koyto)
16/09/14 Kyoto (Sleep: Koyto)
17/09/14 Hida Takayama (Sleep: Nagoya)
18/09/14 Tokyo (Sleep: Tokyo)
19/09/14 Tokyo (Sleep: Tokyo)
20/09/14 Daytrip to Kamakura (Sleep: Tokyo)
21/09/14 Tokyo or daytrip to Nikko? (Sleep: Tokyo)
22/09/14 Hakone (23pm flight from Osaka)

Do you think it's doable? What pass would you recommend?

Thanks!

Tomas

Hi Tomas!

I see you've takes the meantime to plan well!

Personally I would stay in night in Takayama so you can get the most out of your visit here. However going to Nagoya technically does work. I would recommend the 7 day JR Pass for your itinerary as you could use it to cover all long distance travel from Osaka - Hiroshima all the way to Tokyo.

As for Nikko, if you have the time, be sure to drop by. It's a beautiful place to visit and well worth your time.

Hope this hel;ps!
Daniel
