Hi!

I need some help right here in planning our September trip to Japan. We will be flying to Osaka (KIX) and flying out from Narita airport and spending 10days there. This is my initial planning below.

  1. Reach osaka 8.30am. Direcly leave to Kyoto and stay in Kyoto for the night
  2. Kyoto - Miyajima - Hiroshima daytrip
  3. Kyoto - Nara/Osaka daytrip
  4. Move from Kyoto to Hakone and spend the night there. Leave Kyoto early morning to be able to explore hakone more.
  5. Move from Hakone and overnight at Kawagoe (personally wish to stay here)
  6. Move from Kawagoe to Tokyo
  7. Tokyo Sightseeing
  8. Tokyo Disneyland
  9. Tokyo sightseeing
  10. Tokyo sightseeing
  11. Tokyo to Narita Airport

my questions are:
1. as for now i was just thinking of getting the 14days JR pass but that means i have wasted 4 days of the cost of a JR pass. is there any cheaper option looking at my itinerary where i could use 7days jr?
2. will 5 days tokyo sightseeing be too much?

Any food or place recommendation for autumn September trip will be much appreciated too. Please help!! Thanks!

Hi there,

1.) Personally I would go for a 7 day JR Pass and use it for the day trip to Hiroshima and travel from the Kansai area to Hakone/Kanto. These trips are the most expansive without a JR Pass. Local travel within Tokyo does not cost a lot compared to cross country travel and you are better off to buy local tickets or day passes in Tokyo.

2.) I don't think so, you could spend months in Tokyo and see new things every day. I recommend a visit to Tsukiji fish market for the best Sashimi and try out the festival foods like, takoyaki, okonomiyaki (or Monja).

Hope this helps,
Daniel
