Not sure what passes to get/when to activate JR Pass

I'm a little confused as to when I should activate my JR Pass, which one to get, and whether or not I need a Pasmo or Suica card for some of our days. I fly into Narita Airport on March 25th and leave on April 9th-- 16 days in total.

This is my itinerary:

March 25, Tokyo (Arrival)
March 26, Tokyo
March 27, Tokyo
March 28, Hakone/Tokyo
March 29, Kyoto
March 30, Kyoto
March 31, Kyoto
April 1, Kyoto/Koyasan
April 2, Kanazawa
April 3, Kanazawa
April 4, Hiroshima
April 5, Hiroshima/Miyajima
April 6, Osaka
April 7, Osaka/Nara
April 8, Tokyo
April 9, Tokyo (Departure)

Any help on this would be appreciated-- everything I've read on Japanese travel is very confusing!

Thanks in advance!

Hello Dani,

Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto, Kanazawa and Hiroshima are the routes that cost the most by far, so using a JR Pass here is definitely a good idea. Given that you'll be traveling for more than a week, I advise using the 14 day JR Pass for travel starting from March 28.

The JR Pass will cover nearly all your travel but Koya-san will require additional tickets between Osaka and Koya-san. More can be found here.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
