Hi,

It is easy to go from Tokyo to JR Nikko Station. If you have a JR Pass, you can use it for the trip. There is also a Tobu Nikko Free Pass which you can use to see many good places there.

There are also nice hot springs there, which your family should experience at least once in Japan.

There is no need at all to spend hundreds of dollars on some tour company, when you can just do it yourself at your own pace and pleasure.
