Hello,

I am trying to find the most cost effective way to travel for my 10 day trip in Japan with my family.

Here's the itinerary:

Day 1 to Day 2: Arrive at Narita airport then stay at Tachikawa
Day 3: Hakone
Day 4 to Day 9: Kyoto
Day 10: Leave Kyoto for Narita Airport

Does it make sense to get the 7 day pass use it for the last 7 days of the trip and pay separate for the 1st few days of the trip in Tokyo and Hakone?

Does it make sense just to get the 14 day pass?

The hakone portion of the trip is optional. If it costs a lot less to skip Hakone, we can do that.

Your answers and opinions are appreciated! Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Michille,

I checked the route for you and think that a 7 day JR Pass could certainly be of use. A 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price and any additional travel you may do is basically what you save (such as travel to Narita Airport).

Hakone is directly on the route Tokyo - Kyoto so you could make a stop over if you want. The station name is Odawara and is on the Shinkansen. Do note that travel within Hakone is run by other companies than JR and require separate tickets. I would recommend visiting Hakone of day 4 before you travel to Kyoto, this way you can save money on travel there and avoid extra travel time.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your reply! It sounds like I should get the 7 day pass and use it starting when I leave from Hakone to Kyoto on Day 4… which also covers the travel cost coming back to Narita airpot from Kyoto on Day 10.
