Hi!

Next month starts my trip to Japan for two and a half month (very happy about it). Could you please help me? I don't now if my best option is buying a JR pass or not.

This is my trip:

5th of April Narita - Tokyo (Ueno)
Two weeks. I would like to make some smaller trips near Tokyo during my second week.

20th of April Tokyo - Suzuka (Nagano region) (Hyperdia: aprox 12000 Yen)
After arriving here I won't use trains for two weeks.

4th of May Suzuka - Kyoto (aprox 7200 Yen)
One week. And maybe a small trip to Osaka, but mainly Kyoto.

11th of May Kyoto - Seto (pottery classes) (aprox 8000 Yen)
Staying in Seto till 2nd of June. After arriving here I would like to make some smaller trips near Seto (but mainly during weekends).

From 2nd of June till 11th of June ??? this last week I'll keep it as a surprise for myself (maybe a beautiful place near the sea?)

What would you recommend in order to get the best out of a rail pass? I appreciate the help very much!

Arigato gozaimazu!
Best regards,

Celeste

Hi Celeste,

Staying such a long time in Japan is absolutely great! I must say that I am somewhat jealous.
A JR Pass pays off when you use it for a certain amount of travel within it's validity period. Since you have such a nice amount of time in Japan it would however be hard for a JR Pass to pay off. For your travel up to Kyoto there's not much enough travel for a JR Pass to be use full.

However you could consider buying a JR Pass for your surprise trip between 2nd - 11th of June. You could for instance head to Kyushu, the most southern island of mainland Japan. Personally I love this area best! You could for instance head to Nagasaki, or Kagoshima. The view of Sakura Jima is amazing and you can visit the sand beaches of Ibushuki.

An other great option to enjoy some sea, sun, sand and art is a visit to Naoshima.

I can give you some better recommendations if you tell me what you are interested in!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks very much for your kind and honest answer, appreciate that a lot! Haha, I am really looking forward to this trip...

So my descision is not buying a JR pass. Maybe for my surprise week. Kyushu looks fantastic....but am I right that it takes a plane from Seto?

I love everything about art, nature, culture, good food, well everything about good life :-)

Thank you for help!!

Have a beautiful day,

Celeste

Hi Celeste,

If you love art and zen gardens consider a visit to the Adachi Museum of Art near Matsue. I was really impressed by it when I made the visit last year, from there you can also visit Izumo-Taisha which alone is worth a visit.

Kyushu is certainly reachable by train btw :)

Let me know if you have any question, I'd be more than happy to help!
Daniel
