Hi everyone,

My family of 4 (including kids age 8 and 12) will be travelling in Dec15.

Draft itinerary as follows:
Day 1-3 : Arrive Haneda / Disneyland / DisneySea
Day 4-6 : Tokyo - Karuizawa Prince Resort - back to Shinjuku
Day 7-8 : Hakone
Day 9-10 : Tokyo

My question is for day 4-6 (Tues-Thurs), is it worth to get the Kanto area pass or just to buy the normal unreserved seats for the Shinkansen? For weekday travel, will there by any problem finding seats from Shinjuku to Karuizawa and return back? Is there any difference in terms of seats spacing and comfort ?

Would appreciate for all comments!

Thank you!

Hi,

Just by going to Karuizawa alone you'd easily pay for the Kanto Area Pass - so it's a good deal. Very unlikely to have any seating problems that time of year. Trains are the same, so no worries.

For Hakone, look into getting a Hakone Free Pass.

Best of luck.

Hi Toraneko,

Thanks for your reply. May I know for normal ticket, is the child fare 50% of the adult price?
If so, by buying normal unreserved seat is much cheaper as compared to the Kanto Area Pass

Kanto Area Pass : 29,100 yen
Normal tickets (Reserved) : 40,635 yen
Normal tickets (unreserved) : 18,130 yen - if I have calculated correctly using Hypedia?

Hi,
Fares for kids 6-11 is typically half the adult fare. But the child fare (6-11 yrs) for the Kanto Area Pass is also half the adult price, or ¥4,200. I suggest you see the official page for the Kanto Area Pass if you haven't seen it already. The adult cost of the Kanto Area Pass is ¥8,300.

The full JR Pass price is ¥29,110 for adults and ¥14,550 for kids. You appear to be confusing the Kanto Area Pass with the full JR Pass.

Good luck.

Hi,

The cost which I mentioned earlier for kanto Area Pass is for 3 adults + 1 child, thus total ¥29,100
I have used Hyperdia to calculate the cost for the same return trip (unreserved seats) for 3A1C to be ¥18,130

Hope I get it right.

Thanks much for your help!

Hi,

Now I understand.

One way trip from Tokyo to Karuizawa:
Total fare is 5390 yen and the Fare is 2590 yen while "Seat Fee" is 2800 yen.
Reserved seat fee (low-season) = 3120 yen
Unreserved seat fee = 2800 yen

I had previously mistaken that we don't need to pay this 3120 yen if you do not take the reserved seat.

Therefore, if to make a round trip to Karuizawa, it will cost (2590+2800)*2=10780 yen even if I will take the unreserved seat.

Hence a Kanto Pass of 8300 is well worth it! Hope I'm right now.
