Hi all,

My partner and I are unsure of the best rail pass to get for our itinerary. Our itinerary is as follows:

09/05/13 Osaka - Arrive
10/05/13 Osaka
11/05/13 Tanabe
12/05/13 Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage - Day 1 (Tsugizakura-oji)
13/05/13 Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage - Day 2 (Kumano Hongu Taisha)
14/05/13 Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage - Day 3 (Koguchi)
15/05/13 Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage - Day 4 (Kumano Nachi Taicha)
16/05/13 Kyoto
17/05/13 Kyoto
18/05/13 Kyoto
19/05/13 Kyoto
20/05/13 Kyoto
21/05/13 Hiroshima
22/05/13 Hiroshima
23/05/13 Tokyo
24/05/13 Tokyo
25/05/13 Tokyo
26/05/13 Tokyo
27/05/13 Tokyo
28/05/13 Tokyo
29/05/13 Osaka
30/05/13 - Depart

We have our transport arrangements made before Kyoto but are unsure of what JR Pass to buy for the rest of the trip.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi there!

Looks like you will be in Japan for 22 days. Lets take a look at the approximate costs assuming you use the Haruka+ICOCA deal to get into Osaka on arrival (and also get the prepaid travel card :) ):

  1. Osaka > Kiitanabe: ¥5,290 (147mins, 175km)
  2. Nachi > Kyoto: ¥8,630 (347mins, 303km)
  3. Kyoto > Hiroshima: ¥10,590 (112mins, 380km)
  4. Hiroshima > Tokyo: ¥18,050 (293mins, 894km)
  5. Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13,550 (194mins, 556km)
  6. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3,340 (57mins, 64km)

JR ticket cost: ¥59,450 for 7 legs

As you can see, your JR ticket costs will basically be the same as a 21 day JR Pass based on your above itinerary.

I think in your case I would go for the 21 day JR Pass as you are likely to get good use on the JR lines in Tokyo, and any further JR day trips you may do will be totally free (eg, Nikko or Kamakura while in Tokyo, Arashiyama, Nara, Kinosaki onsen, Kurashiki, Himeji, Kobe while in Kyoto/Osaka). The amount you save at the end of your trip will really depend on the extent to which you add on day trips to your existing plan.

I hope this helps!

I've just read your post again and see that you have travel plans made up until Kyoto. Here are your basic costs from Kyoto onwards:

  1. Kyoto > Hiroshima: ¥10,590 (112mins, 380km)
  2. Hiroshima > Tokyo: ¥18,050 (293mins, 894km)
  3. Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13,550 (194mins, 556km)
  4. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3,340 (57mins, 64km)

JR ticket cost: ¥45,530 for 4 legs

The nationwide JR Pass is the only pass that will cover your journey, and again basically breaks even with JR ticket costs according to your itinerary. Assuming you activate a 14 day pass on the 17th, you'll get good JR cover until you depart, and as in my first itinerary plan will make savings provided you do any further JR travel.

I hope this helps, and sorry for the double answer!

Thank you so much for your feedback.

I think we'll be purchasing the 21 day as we'll be activating it on the 16th.

What's the delivery timeframe of passes to Sydney, NSW Australia?

Hi there!

Delivery to Sydney is 4 business days (max) from order (1 processing and 3 transit). This means that if you were to order today you would have it by thursday 11th April at the latest.

I hope this helps!

Hi,

My partner and I are about to put in an order for the 21Day First Class JRPass but we're confused about the information that we have to put in the "First Name" space. On the website, it says to put in your First Name but she believes we should put in our first and second name in the "First Name" space. She doesn't want me to put an order in until I confirm this with you guys/girls.

Also...we're wondering if the JRPass is valid on the buses inbetween our Kumano Kodo hike? New travel arrangements have been made but still sticking to our original itinerary which means we'll be using the Haruka+ICOCA deal to get into Osaka and activating the JRPass in Osaka (10th May 2013).
