ITINERARY CHECK + which JR pass to get?

Hello! It is our first trip to Japan (two people traveling from may 11, 2016 to may 26, 2016) Wondering if you could check our itinerary and let us know if it looks ok? Thank you :)

MAIN QUESTIONS:

2. is it ok to travel straight to osaka from our tokyo arrival? already booked plane ticket to NRT but want to start in osaka and end in tokyo so it's not stressful in the latter portion of our trip..
3. on DAY 5 should we do the traveling to kyoto that night OR stay night in osaka and leave early for kyoto on DAY 6?

Hi there,

Before we start: I like your itinerary. Now let's get started!

1.) You'll be travelling quite a bit and there is more than enough travel cost to make savings using a 14 day JR Pass. I would advise using it from Day 1 to Day 14.

2.) I think this mostly comes down to personal preference, by travelling right away to Osaka you get a lot of travel out of the way but it may also feel busy at the same time.

3.) Again, this is somewhat personal. Travelling late means you can check-in right away but you also have to keep an eye on the clock for the whole day, while travelling early may feel more relaxed but luggage and check-in may be more difficult.

The rest looks very nice.

Enjoy your travels!

THANK YOU! was wondering one last thing...in some places we are going to have bikes to get around and explore..for the other times i'm just a bit confused about which passes will get us around the cities (shorter distances) vs the JR pass which i view as something to get us farther for the longer distances around the whole of japan. i was reading about the JR shikoku birthday pass (my birthday is in may)..can you clarify which passes might be useful for getting around each city? or do we just buy tickets as we need them while we are in the cities? let me know when you can!

Hi again!

In Kyoto using a bicycle is great, otherwise look at using a 500yen bus pass. That allows for unlimited travel on the Kyoto city bus.

The JR Pass will carry you for most most travel, even locally. For instance the Hiroshima sightseeing bus is also included.

Lastly, in Tokyo look at Tokyo Metro Day passes.

Hope this helps too :)
