Itinerary Check and General Travel in Japan

Hello there,

  1. Mar 21 (Sat) is a public holiday in Japan. How would it affect the tourist attractions in Tokyo pls? i.e. will some of them be closed earlier, or closed for the day?

  2. We aren't able to book any hotels in Kyoto and have therefore booked a hotel in Osaka as the base for Kyoto/Osaka/Nara/Kobe. Is there a more recommended itinerary for this setting pls?

  3. How would you describe the general safety in Japan (esp. on JR trains)? Anything we should pay special attention to?

  4. We can bring our big luggage to the JR trains - right?

  5. Should we make reservations in advance, if possible, for the tourist attractions in order to avoid long line-ups?

Many thanks.

Hello there,

1.) Tourist retractions generally remain open during public holidays. It could be more busy though. Be sure to check the locations website beforehand, this way you can confirm if something is open.

2.) The Kansai area where Kyoto/Osaka/Nara/Kobe all are located is actually pretty small and travel is easy. It does not really matter where you stay as travel between all places is possible. Osaka is nicely in the middle though, so it's a good place to stay.

3.) I would say excellent! Trains are very clean and there is a lot of helpful staff around. It's something you won't find elsewhere in the world.

4.) Yes you are allowed to bring a suitcase aboard. Please be aware that really large luggage can be refused if it inconveniences other passengers.

5.) Generally seats reservations are not required for as trains hardly sell out. It can be good to make reservations for tourist attractions, such as the Tokyo Skytree to skip the queues.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
