I'm going to be in Japan from the 16th til 29th of November.I fly into Kansai and plan on staying two nights with a friend in Osaka, then four night in Kyoto with another friend. After that I plan on two nights I'm Hiroshima, finishing up with 5 in Tokyo! Does this sound like a balanced itinerary? Also, would it make sense to get a 7 or 14 day rail pass? Or buy each ticket individually? Greatful for any help or advice!!!

Hi Ellen,

That sounds like a very good plan! I like the idea that you visit Hiroshima before going to Tokyo.

The JR Pass is best used when you travel longer distances. I would recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for your itinerary. I would use the JR Pass to at least cover the follow parts:

Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 540
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 10,790
Hiroshima - Tokyo ¥ 18,050

For a total of ¥ 29,380 the 7 day JR Pass is 28,300 so you would save ¥ 1,080. This is not a big difference with normal tickets but you do get 7 days of unlimited travel and you can use the JR Pass on local trains in both Tokyo and Osaka or use it for a day trip to Nara or Nikko for instance.

I hope this helps!

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your advise! Although looking at my dates, if I got the travel pass for 7 days to start when leaving Osaka, it wouldn't cover Hiroshima-Tokyo. So would it still be worth while, since the saving is only 500 yen? Is it useful to have this pass when in Tokyo city, for metro etc? If so then it would make sense too have it while I'm in the city
Thanks
Ellen

Hi Ellen,

It would depend on how much additional travel you would make with it. The JR Pass is valid on local JR lines in Tokyo which you can use to travel around the city and visit most major spots. I've added a map with all lines covered in Tokyo so you can get an idea of what is included.

In addition you can also use the JR Pass in Hiroshima on the ferry to Miyajima, which makes for an amazing visit while you are in the area.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
