Is the 14 day pass right for me?

Hi,
I am arriving at Narita airport in Tokyo on the 21/8/13 and staying in Tokyo until 26/8/13. In this time we are planning on traveling to Fugi Five Lakes to view Mt Fugi. Also, we are traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto on the 26/8/13 and plan to make a day trip to Hiroshima from Kyoto on 29/8/13. On the 30/8/13 we were planning on traveling back to Tokyo/Narita airport from Kyoto and then fly home. I have tried to determine the individual costs for these train trips but am having trouble finding consistent prices. Would it be easier/cheaper for me to buy a 14 day pass?
Thank you

Hi there!

I think a 7 day JR Pass would be the best option for your itinerary. This because you can use it to cover all your long distance travel (Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Tokyo) which can very rather expansive without a JR Pass. At the same time Fuji and surrounding area are best reached by private railway / which are not covered by the JR Pass.

You could make the following savings with the 7 day JR Pass:

Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,420
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 10,990
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 10,990
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,420
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 3,140

For a total of ¥ 51,960 or ¥ 23,660 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. Which is really good, even if I say so myself :)

Have a good journey!
-Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Thank you so much for you help! So does that mean we would just buy our first ticket from Narita Airport to Tokyo separately?
Thanks again
Sarah

Hi Again!

You could either buy a single ticket to Tokyo or make use of one of the discount packages available.
For instance the Narita Expres + Suica Pass which is a nicely discounted ticket to Tokyo and comes with a prepaid Suica card that you can use to travel around Tokyo (or buy something to drink with from a vending machine, if you are covered by the JR Pass).

All the best!
Daniel
