Hi,
We are uncertain as to whether or not a JR rail pass is the right thing for us. Could you help us please?
Our itinerary:
May 9-15 - Tokyo, arriving at Narita airport (one day trip to Nikko)
-accommodation is on the Yamanote line
May 16-23 - Kyoto, day trip to Nara
May 24 - Koya-san
May 25-26 - Hiroshima
Thank you!
JG
Is a JR rail pass cost effective for our trip?
Hello JG,
I think a JR Pass could be useful, however to be sure could you please let me know what you will do after Hiroshima. For instance will you return to Tokyo or fly out from somewhere else?
Hope to hear from you,
Daniel
Thanks for your reply!
From Hiroshima we'll be taking the hydrofoil to Matsuyama where we'll be renting a car for the last few weeks to explore Shukoku and Kyushu.
Hi JG,
Thank you, that makes things a lot clearer.
Here's a little list of normal ticket prices to give you an idea prices involved.
Tokyo - Nikko (return) ¥ 11,260
Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,420
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 10,990
Kyoto - Nara (return) ¥ 1,380
For a total of ¥ 37,050. The 7 day JR Pass could give you ¥ 8,750 savings. However I think that it would be better to buy tickets as you travel, since you have such a good amount of time to spend in each place.
Hope this helps!
Daniel
Thank you so much for taking the time to figure this all out for us.
I won't worry about this anymore and we will plan on purchasing tickets as we travel.
Your expertise is very much appreciated!
