My group of 3 would like to buy & use the JR 7 days pass for our 8 nights stay in Japan from Feb 9 to Feb 17 2017.

Hokkaido ( 3 nights ) - Tokyo( 1 night ) - Takayama ( 2 nights ) - Shirakawago - Kanazawa - Mt Fuji ( 1 night ) - Tokyo ( 1 night )

Planned Itinerary :
1st Stop - 3 nights in Hokkaido
2nd Stop - 1 night in Tokyo ( after return from Hokkaido )
3rd Stop - Depart early morning from Tokyo to Takayama. 1st night in Takayama
- Travel to Shirakawago to view the village in the daytime & night scene with light up - Spend 2nd night in Takayama 4th Stop - To view Mount Fuji & stay 1 night near Mt Fuji or back to Tokyo city
5th Stop - Tokyo ( Last night in Japan )

Questions :
1. Would 7 days JR Pass be useful for my itinerary ?
2. Travel from Tokyo to Takayama to Shirakawago to Kanazawa, can the JR Pass be used?
Please advise how & which mode of transport will be best for my plan. Our plan is to view Shirakawago in the day &
night scenes. 3. Is it possible to view Shirakawago in the day by travelling from Takayama then proceed to visit Kanazawa for a short visit before heading back to Shirakawago to view the night scene of the village then return to Takayama to spend a night ?
How to travel to the places mentioned above ? By bus or train or Shinkasen ? Where to get information on all these mode of transport ? Are they covered by JR Pass ?
4. Is it possible also to visit Okuhida while I am in Takayama/Kanazawa area ? Please suggest how to include this place into my itinerary & how much travel time is required .
5. Departing Takayama, we would like to view Mount Fuji. Base on our itinerary, where would you suggest that we travel to to view Mount Fuji during that season & anywhere worth for us to spend 1 night or we should return to spend the night in Tokyo as we are spending our last night in Tokyo.
6. Tsukiji Fish Market - what is the best thing to do or eat there? What time is the best time to go for some good fresh seafood at the restaurants there
7. With just 1 or 2 days in Tokyo, where to visit & what to do & what to buy?

Appreciate all suggestion or advice with details & contacts of how to make reservation for the different mode of transport, especially bus or tour to view Shirakawago day & night scene. Any recommendation on places to visit or ryokan or hotel would be highly appreciated.

Thank you ! ^ ^

Hello there,

1.) A 7 day JR Pass would be amazing if used for the from Hokkaido to Tokyo and Takayama/Kanazawa. You would likely save double the price of the JR Pass. You can find out exactly how much via our JR Fare Calculator.

2.) The JR Pass can be used for all rail travel on this route, note that the bus between Takayama/Kanazawa - Shirakawago is not included.

3.) This would really be to much to do on a single day. Most people would just visit Shirakawa-go as a day trip from either Takayama or Kanazawa. Could be included as a bus stop to Shirakawago but you would have to plan really well, as there are only a limited amount of buses that stop there.

You could make a stop at Hakone for this, see the below post for details: http://www.jrpass.com/blogs/itinerary-tip-mt-fuji

Tsukiji Fish Market - what is the best thing to do or eat there? What time is the best time to go for some good fresh seafood at the restaurants there If you want to see the best, then it is best to come very early for the Tuna auction and line up at 2 am for one of the 100 spots that are given to visitors each morning.

With just 1 or 2 days in Tokyo, where to visit & what to do & what to buy? That really depends on your own interests. My personal recommendations would include a visit to Asakusa, Ginza, Akihabara, Odaiba and Shinjuku.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you very much for your prompt response & helpful advice.

May I seek your advice again on the Takayama , Shirakawago & Kanazawa itinerary.
When is the winter light up for 2017? What time & day happen on the light up days?
Where can I find all the transportation information for getting from Takayama to Shirakawgo to Kanazawa?
I need bus or train Company, bus or train timing schedule, how to get tickets or make reservation etc.

Appreciate your advice Daniel San ^ ^

Hi again,

The only way to see the light up is to use a rental car or stay the night at Shirakawa-go, the last buses leave around 5 pm.

The bus company is called NoHi bus and you can find their information and time tables here:
https://www.nouhibus.co.jp/english/

Tickets can be reserved by phone (in Japanese only) or purchased at the ticket stations of Kanazawa/Takayama stations.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
