Sapporo 2 nights checking out the festival day/night and sights and shops
Train to Asahikawa 1 night - festival
Train to Otaru 1 night - festival
Train from Otaru - Fly from Sapporo to Osaka - train to Kyoto then Kobe for dinner back to Kyoto for 3 nights
Whilst in Kyoto, sightsee, shopping, bamboo Forrest, will also be doing a day trip to Nara whilst in Kyoto.
Train to Hiroshima 1 night in Hiroshima - Mazda museum, peace park
Train to Miyajima for day then train to Osaka (4 nights) - USJ, sightseeing, shopping, Osaka castle, day trip to Himeji or half day if that's enough.
Train to Yudanaka 1 night (snow monkeys and look around)
Train to Tokyo 6 nights - whilst there besides the theme parks and shopping and general sight seeing including Studio Ghlibli, I also plan on doing 3 day trips - Fuji Q, Kawazu and Hakone

Should I get a 7 day pass or 14 day pass or other suggestions please.

Hi there,

A JR Pass is best used for long periods of travel. Looking at your itinerary, I would go with a 7 day JR Pass for travel to Hiroshima - Miyajima - Osaka - Nagano/Yudanaka and Tokyo. This will give you outstanding savings compared to buying normal tickets.

It does not make a lot of sense to extend to a 14 day JR Pass, since you'll be flying to Hokkaido and Osaka in the first part of the itinerary.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you!

Just another Question, as I'll be using local trains all over Japan, is there a card that covers all of them or will I need to buy cards in all areas?

Hi there,

All local JR lines are included. Other transport may not be, such as the Tokyo Metro. It can be smart to look at day pases if you plan on using a lot of local travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
