Hi!

We are travelling to Japan Aug 24-Sept 6. We have friends with a car, so some legs of this trip will be with them, hence some of the holes in our travels. Can you please give me an idea if the 14 day pass would be worth it and if not, when we should ideally activate the 7 day pass? I know this itinerary is cramped, but this is the most train travel we'd do. 2 adults and 2 children (under 4).

Arrive Fukuoka 6p Aug 24 - we need to take the express or we won't be able to arrive in Nagoya that evening. I believe that is not covered by the JRPass anyway, correct?

Aug 27: Hakone - Tokyo
Aug 29: Tokyo - Nagoya
Aug 30: Nagoya- Kyoto
Aug 31: Kyoto - Nagoya
Sept 4: Nagoya - Osaka
Sept 5: Osaka - Fukuoka

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi there,

A 7 day pass is ¥28,300, and a 14 day pass is ¥45,100, so you'll need to spend more than this on individual JR tickets for either of these passes to be worthwhile. Lets take a look at your trip:

  1. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥1450, (36mins, 83km)
  2. Tokyo > Nagoya: ¥10580, (126mins, 366km)
  3. Nagoya > Kyoto: ¥5440, (37mins, 147km)
  4. Kyoto > Nagoya: ¥5440, (49mins, 147km)
  5. Nagoya > Osaka: ¥6180, (67mins, 190km)
  6. Osaka > Hakata: ¥14590, (182mins, 626km)

TOTAL: ¥43680 for 6 legs

Based on your itinerary a 14 day pass will not be the most economical option, however you can see that you'll make savings of ¥3350 if you activate a 7 day rail pass on the 30th-5th. The big savings of ¥13,930 will come if you can compress your trip by one more day and include your trip from Tokyo to Nagoya into your 7 day rail pass validity period, however this will very much depend on the flexibility of your itinerary.

The last Sakura bullet valid for JR Pass holders that would get you into Nagoya on the same day leaves Hakata/Fukuoka at 18:38, so it's unlikely you'll be able to make this if you're getting off a flight at 18:00.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! We are flexible in our schedule, so we can plan on extra time in Tokyo and then activating the pass later to save money. Really appreciate your help!
