Hello all,

Can I ask for some feedback on using the JR Pass for a family of 6 with the following itinerary:

Arrive Narita Airport - Thursday eve
Narita to Hiroshima - Early Friday leave first train Friday am from Naritia to Hiroshima
Hiroshima to Kyoto Saturday PM (is it possible to go via Miyajima?)
Kyoto to Fuji - Early Tuesday
Fuji to Tokyo - Early Thursday

I don't quite understand which of the bullet trains I cannot use with the rail pass?

Also is it too ambitious to try and get from Hiroshima to Kyoto via Miyajima in 1 day *arrive late in Kyoto?

Thanks in advance

Richard

Hi Richard,

The longest route by far Narita Airport - Hiroshima. If you are fine with making that trip in one go, then I don't see any problem.

Miyajima can be seen in half a day and going to Kyoto after is perfectly fine. You won't have much time to do much in Kyoto on the same day though.

The JR Pass will give you very good savings for this itinerary and travel between also of the above cities is covered. Including the ferry to Miyajima. You may however still need local transport for Fuji, depending on what are you wish to visit.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi,
As for going from Miyajima to Kyoto, Miyajima is actually a bit farther south than Kyoto, so you will need to return to Hiroshima and change trains to get the bullet train to Kyoto. You could in fact go just a bit beyond Miyajima if you have time and visit Iwakuni, with its iconic historical bridge and mountaintop castle.
About the bullet train usage, the most important thing is that you cannot take the fastest bullet train, called the Nozomi. The time difference is not that much however -- it's only about 30 minutes longer from Tokyo to Osaka; from Hiroshima back to Kyoto it is insignificant.
For seeing Mt. Fuji, you need to decide if you'd prefer going to Hakone or the Fuji 5 Lakes Area. There are day passes for both.
Hakone has some good hot spring places to stay the night though, and they are quite relaxing.

Best of luck.

Hi Daniel and Toraneko

Thank you both very much for your answers

This is very useful

Would you also happen to know which is the earliest I can get to Hiroshima from Narita?

Thank you again

Richard

Hi,
First one correction: I meant to say Miyajima is actually a bit farther south than Hiroshima...

Anyways, regarding rail schedules, you should check Hyperdia. You can go to Hyperdia and just plug in your starting point and end point, plus date/time that you like. But be sure under "More Options" to deselect "Nozomi..." since you can't ride that on the Pass.

Good luck!
