Hi,

3 of us are visiting Japan from 1st May to 11th May. We would like to know whether we need to buy JR Pass, or it is cheaper to buy individual tickets once we are in Japan.

Our itinerary:

May 1: Narita airport to Tokyo

May 2: no train travel

May 3: Tokyo - Hakone
May 4: Hakone - Nikko

May 5: no train travel

May 6: Nikko to Kyoto

May 7: no train travel
May 8: no train travel

May 9: Kyoto - Nara - Kyoto
May 10: Kyoto to Osaka

Thanks
Divi

Hi Divi,

Given that you would use the JR Pass from May 3-9 you would cover the following routes:

Tokyo - Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 3,840
Hakone - Nikko ¥ 9,390
Nikko - Kyoto ¥ 18,110
Kyoto - Nara (return) ¥ 1,380

For a total of ¥ 32,720 or ¥ 4,420 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. Note that this travel using the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Odawara, as well as Shinkansen travel to Nikko. There are also other kinds of transport available such as bus or local train travel which have a lower fare. In addition the JR Pass can be used to travel up to Odawara which is the Shinkansen station for Hakone, from there however local transport companies facilitate travel around the Hakone region which is not covered by the JR Pass.

I hope this helps!

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response.

Is Kyoto to Osaka cheaper than Tokyo - Hakone? What is the price for this ticket?

Should I start using the JR Pass on 3rd May or from 4th - 9th May to cover Kyoto - Osaka trip (one
-way).

Please also let me know the single day return trip charges Tokyo - Hakone - Tokyo as we might not stay overnight at Hakone.

Also, what is Tokyo - Nikko - Tokyo return price?

Thanks

Hi Again!

I would use the JR Pass from May 3rd until 9th, this way you can make the most of your JR Pass.

As for more ticket prices
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540 one way
Tokyo - Hakone ¥ 7,680 (return to Odawara by Shinkansen)
Tokyo - Nikko ¥ 11,260 price for a return

Note that there's generally no difference in price between a return ticket and twice a one way ticket.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
