Hi! Could you tell me if a 14-day pass is cheaper than normal tickets for my itinerary for one person:

Day 1 Narita Airport-Tokyo
Day 2 Tokyo city
Day 3 Tokyo to Takayama
Day 4 Takayama
Day 5 Takayama to Matsuyama (Shikoku)
Day 6 Matsuyama
Day 7 Matsuyama
Day 8 Matsuyama to Koyasan
Day 9 Koyasan
Day 10 Koyasan to Sakurai (Nara)
Day 11 Sakurai
Day 12 Sakurai to Hakone
Day 13 Hakone
Day 14 Hakone to Narita Airport

Apreciate a prompt reply as I'm leaving for Japan in the next 5 days time. Thank you.

Hi Karen,

Interesting itinerary, let's have a look at ticket prices and find out:

Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 3,020
Tokyo - Takayama ¥ 15,830
Takayama - Matsuyama ¥ 19,800
Matsuyama - Osaka (for Koya-san) ¥ 12,790
Koya - Sakurai see this route. Price ¥ 1,280 of which ¥840 is covered by the JR Pass.
Sakurai - Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 12,940
Odawara - Narita Airport ¥ 6,970

For a total of ¥ 72,190 or ¥ 25,800 in savings, as the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390. So it will be well worth it to get a 14 day JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you, Daniel. I have since returned from my trip and I took your advice. It was an amazing trip, by the way.

So, I'm planning to return to Japan in April. I would like to find out if it's worth getting the 14-day JR pass this time around. Here's my tentative itinerary:

Day 1: Narita Airport-Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo-Osaka (for Koyasan)
Day 3-9: Koyasan
Day 10: Osaka-Fukuoka
Day 11: Fukuoka to Beppu
Day 12: Beppu
Day 13: Beppu-Osaka
Day 14: Osaka-Tokyo-Narita Airport

Thank you so very much.

Hi Karen,

Great to hear you had a good time in Japan! I always start planning my next trip too before even finishing the last.

As for the JR Pass: a 14 day JR Pass would work very well for your itinerary. Traveling from Tokyo - Osaka to Hiroshima already is enough for a 14 day JR Pass to pay off. You'll be going even further to Fukuoka and Beppu, which way further down. So getting a JR Pass is something you that almost speaks for itself.

No now that is out of the way, time to start thing about the more important things. Such as what the eat in Japan!

All the best,
Daniel
