Do I Even need a 7 Day pass

I will be arrive in Osaka on July 25 in the after afternoon and staying there for 2 nights then on to Kyoto for 2 nights then finally 4 nights in Tokyo leaving August 2.

I will not be traveling to any other cities just those 3, so I was thinking do i need the JR 7 day Pass and the local city Pass or can I do without one? And if so which one?

Hello Thin,

A 7 day JR Pass can be a good option if you make a return Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka. Going one how however is not enough to really make the JR Pass pay off. In other words.

Travel between Kyoto and Osaka is not very expansive either (560yen), so I would just buy a normal ticket.

Within Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka there are different day passes you can consider. In Osaka check the Osaka Amazing Pass. In Kyoto you can purchase 500yen day bus tickets (a normal bus ride is 230yen) and in Kyoto there are day tickets available for the Tokyo Metro or JR at 750yen each.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for the reply!

I will be leaving Japan from Tokyo so i will not be making any return trips to Kyoto or Osaka.

So it will be better for me to skip on the 7 day JR pass and just get local day passes in each city.

Hi Grunz87,

Kyoto - Tokyo is about 3 hours by train. It's possible to make a day trip from Tokyo but it would mean spending almost 6 hours on the train. Kyoto and Osaka however are only 30 minutes apart.
