Hello - Thank you so much for your assistance! I wanted to see whether we should purchase the 7-day JR Pass or the 14-day JR Pass for our upcoming trip. I am traveling with my husband and our 20-month old toddler.

We are thinking of the following sights to visit:

DATES (DAYS) - PLACES
Dec 13-18 (1-6) - Tokyo (arrival in Narita)
Dec 19 (7) - Yudanaka (visit snow monkeys, 1 night stay in ryokan)
Dec 20-22?? Kyoto/Nara (flexible)
Dec 23?? Hiroshima/Miyajima (flexible)
Dec 24-26?? Osaka/Himeji Castle (flexible)
Dec 27-28 (15-16) Tokyo (departure from Narita)

1 - Are we missing anything major? I wasn't sure if we could get a good view of Mt. Fuji in December. I am trying to think of possible day trips that we could do from Tokyo in the first 6 days.

2 - After Yudanaka and the snow monkeys, we haven't planned anything except our return trip to Tokyo at the end. So we are totally flexible in how to see Kyoto/Nara, Hiroshima/Miyajima, and Osaka/Himeji Castle. I just want to make sure that we use the most economical route to get to all places.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm overwhelmed with all the information out there and haven't quite gotten a handle of the Hyperdia app yet.

Best,
Farah

Hi Farah,

1.) I think you have a good selection for a first-time visit to Japan. Generally visiting Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima are the main cities that I would recommend visiting. A side visit to Nikko could be a nice addition.

2.) Looks good as it is planned now. Hiroshima is furthest away and you spread your travel around nicely by visiting Kyoto first and Osaka after. Himeji can be added on the route from Hiroshima to Osaka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel - Thank you so much! Do you think we would need the 7-day pass or the 14-day pass for this itinerary? We want to take the most economical route that we can.

Thank you,
Farah

Hi Farah,

Definitely the 14 day JR Pass! You will be traveling a lot more than 7 days (so a 7 day pass simply won't do) and a 14 day JR Pass will be a lot cheaper than buying normal rail tickets.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel - Thanks again! This is very helpful! So when do you recommend I activate the 14-day JR Pass? And will it be sufficient to use the JR Pass to get around Tokyo on the first 6 days of our trip, or do we also need to purchase a Suica card?

Best,
Farah
