Hello,

I'd be most grateful as to your advice regarding a trip my wife and I plan on doing in November 2012.

We'll be travelling around Japan for 7 days with another 7 days in Tokyo. We plan on buying a 7 day pass which encompasses the following travel!

Tokyo - Hiroshima
Hiroshima - Osaka
Osaka - Kyoto
Kyoto - Osaka
Osaka - Kyoto
Kyoto - Osaka
Osaka - Fukuoka
Fukuoka - Tokyo

Is the pass worth it? I've read that its possibly cheaper to buy all tickets separately.

Thanks!

Hi there!

The general rule is that a 7 day pass (¥28,300) is worth buying if you plan on doing a return from Tokyo to Kyoto. You plan on doing much more than that so I think you'll make some great savings. To get a handle on the overall savings, here's the cost breakdown of your trip:

  1. Tokyo > Hiroshima: ¥17,850 (295mins, 894km)
  2. Hiroshima > Osaka: ¥10,820 (109mins, 345km)
  3. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540 (29mins, 42km)
  4. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  5. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540 (29mins, 42km)
  6. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  7. Osaka > Hakata: ¥14,590 (182mins, 626km)
  8. Hakata > Tokyo: ¥21,520 (362mins, 1174km)

JR ticket cost: ¥66,940 for 8 legs

As you can see you'll make great savings with a 7 or 14 day pass. A quick note on your itinerary - How about visiting Fukuoka/Hakata first, then travelling up Japan back to Tokyo stopping at Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka on the way? This way you'll spend the least time on the train and the most time exploring the country :)

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!
