Confused Honeymooners

We are going to Japan for our honeymoon on 11 Jan and this is our itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen
Day 4: Nozawa Onsen

Day 5: Nozawa Onsen* to Takayama
Day 6: Takayama
Day 7: Takayama to Kyoto
Day 8: Kyoto
Day 9: Kyoto
Day 10: Kyoto to Tokyo
Day 11: Depart Tokyo

Our queries:
1. We intended to go to Nozawa Onsen to experience skiing for the first time in our life but all lodgings are fully booked. Any suggestions for us to stay on day 3 to 5 where we can do beginners skiing and visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park? This also has to take into consideration that we are traveling from Tokyo and to Takayama after that.
2. Based on our itinerary (with the recommendation for question 1), what is the best tourist rail pass should we purchase?

Any advices please. Thank you.

Hello there,

1.) That's unfortunate, what websites did you use to search for accommodations? If everything is fully booked, then you could look at staying around Nagano city. The advantage here is that you'll have good access to most places in the area and can visit Jigokudani Snow Money Park. Nagano city is also served by the Shinkansen, so travel on to Tokyo / Takayama will be easy.

.2) Definately the JR Pass! A 7 day JR Pass would be best, especially if you could add in travel to Nozawa Onsen and return to Tokyo before it expires - that would however require a small change of plans. Otherwise I'd advise a one way Tokyo - Nozowa onsen and then use a 7 day JR Pass when you travel back to Tokyo/Takayama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-San

Thanks for your reply.

We used the nozawahotel.com, agoda, booking.com and hotel.com and all replies the same. Any other websites to suggest?

From Nagano City, are there any go skiing places nearby for beginners?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi again!

Try Japanican, Rakuten travel or JNTO, these websites are focused on traveling in Japan and usually can offer you more than global booking websites.

Nozawa is within reasonable distance from Nagano. There are many though here is a complete list. A very popular alternative, is Hakuba, also not too far from Nagano.

Hope this helps too :)
Daniel
