Hi there,

I would recommend going for the 7-day JRPass and start using on the day that you travel to Kyoto.
This way you will be able to use it until you travel to Hakone. I would use a Hakone Free Pass from there to travel in Hakone and back to Tokyo.

Here are some of the savings you can make with the JR-Pass.
Tokyo --> Kyoto ¥ 13,420
Kyoto --> Hiroshima ¥ 10,990
Hiroshima --> Odawara, for Hakone ¥ 17,730

This adds up to ¥ 42,140 or ¥ 13,840 in savings as the 7-day JRPass is ¥ 28,300.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel - THANK YOU :) Only issue is unless I am mistaken - We dont travel to Hakone until the 8 days after our initial trip from Tokyo to Kyoto?

Ouch! Yes you are right!
Sorry about that it is already a little late here in Japan.

In that case I don't think that the 7-day JR-Pass would be a good option but it may be worth getting the 14-day JR Pass.

You can do the following travel with it:
Tokyo --> Kyoto ¥ 13,420
Kyoto --> Hiroshima ¥ 10,990
Hiroshima --> Odawara, for Hakone ¥ 17,730
Odawara --> Tokyo ¥ 3,840
Tokyo --> Narita Airport ¥ 3,140

This adds up to ¥ 48,760 or ¥ 3,660 in savings as the 14-day JR Pass is 45,100. While savings are not as high as the previous option, it is still a good option. Also the freedom to take any train for 14-day is really nice. Possibly if you travel on a budget you could consider trying to fit it in days that you travel from Tokyo and to Hakone in 7 Days.

Sorry about that!
-Daniel
