Thankyou - I think I was searching with too many train service option and not getting the direct route.
Our JR 7 day pass will have expired, there are 5 of us travelling (a family group with older kids, 17, 20, 21) - the fare is 8500 - is there any pass I could use to achieve savings?

It depends on what other travel you may want to do. The JR Pass does cover the Azusa to Harukba :)
If you travel to Hakuba and return to Tokyo, then normal tickets are the best option.
