Hi,

This is my first Japan trip and I will be flying to Osaka during early Novomber.
There are total 5 of us traveling.

I had drafted my itinerary as below:

Day 1 (1st Nov)
Arrival at Kansai Airport (11pm)
Over night in the airport.

Day 2 (2nd Nov) (Kansai Pass)
Osaka to Kyoto (Hotel Check In)
Kyoto - Nara (Half day)
Nara - Kyoto
Stay: Kyoto

Day 3 (3nd Nov) (Kyoto Pass)
Kyoto: Arashiyama - Tenryu-ji - Togetsukyo Bridge - Tofukuji Temple - Kyoto Botanical Garden - Nanzenji - Philosopher's Walk
Stay: Kyoto

Day 4 (4th Nov) (Kyoto Pass)
Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera - Yasui Konpiragu* - Yasaka Jinja - Shimogamo Shrine - Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavillion)
Stay: Kyoto

Day 5 (5th Nov)
Kyoto - Nagoyo : Nagoya Castle - Atsuta Jingu - Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Money Museum - Nagoya TV Tower
Nagoya back to Kyoto
Stay: Kyoto

Day 6 (6th Nov)
Kyoto - Takayama (Hotel Check in)

Shirakawa-go : Wadake Home - Shirakawa-go Hirase Onsen - Miboro dam, Lake Miboro - Hida Tunnel - Amau Pass - Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine

Day 7 (7th Nov) (Kansai Pass)
Takayama : Morning markets (朝市, Asaichi) - Takayama's old town - Hida Folk Village (飛騨の里, Hida no Sato) - Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋)
Takayama - Osaka (Hotel Check in)
Stay: Osaka

Day 8 (8th Nov) (Kansai Pass)
Osaka : Morning till afternoon
Kobe : Half day trip (Afternoon till night)
Stay: Osaka

Day 9 (9th Nov) (Kansai Pass)
Osaka : Minoo park
1pm heading to Kansai Airport (Kansai back to KL flight departing at 5pm).

Please suggest:
1) What passes are recommended?
2) What is the different between JR pass & Kansai Pass?

Hi there,

That's a very nice itinerary and you've done your planning very well. I checked the route for the best tickets/passes and would advise buying normal tickets for your travel to Takayama and back. A normal ticket is around 10,000yen for one way but there's not really a pass which would get you there in good time on the same day. The JR Pass covers the route but there's not enough in ticket prices to make savings with it.

2.) The main difference between the JR Pass and Kansai Pass is the area of useability. The Kansai Pass is only valid within the Kansai area, while the JR Pass covers all of Japan.
