Good night, I am e-mailing from Spain.
We arrive to Tokyo on March 24th and plan to make a trip to Nikko.
Also from tokyo we will go to Kyoto. And from there we want to visit Nara but I dont know if we can sleep one night at Nara or not since after that we are going to Osaka. What I mean is that is there fast train with JR Pass from Nara to Osaka or is it worth it going back to Kyoto and travel from there to Osaka?
Also if I buy the 7 days JRP when I arrive to Haneda I can activate de pass but start using it a couple of days later right?
Does this itinerary make sense and the JRP is worth it?
March 24. Arrival to Tokyo Haneda (asking to activate JR pass for march 26th)
March 25. Tokyo sightseeing
MArch 26. Tokyo with the Japan Rail Pass already
March 27. Train to Nikko and back to Tokyo
March 28. Train from Tokyo to Kyoto
March 29. Kyoto
March 30. Kyoto
March 31. Train to Nara
April 1. Train from Nara to Osaka or we should go to Osaka from Kyoto?
April 2. Osaka (no JR pass this day anymore)
April 3. To Osaka airport for return (no JR pass this day anymore)

Also the JR Pass allows to take those trains with no reservation right? But if I want reservation for the trains of Nikko and Nara trips, how much do I have to pay?
Thank you very much

Hello Lara,

I see you have a couple of questions throughout your post. To start with visiting Nara, this place is close to both Kyoto and Osaka. It's possible to travel to Osaka after Nara without too much difficultly.

As for the JRPass, you buy the exchange voucher outside of Japan and then exchange it within Japan, on the Airport or any of these major stations. You can select a first day of use, when you exchange the Pass. In other words, you don't have to start using it right away.

As for value, the JR Pass will give you very good value for your money. A 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto, so any additional travel you do with it, basically is free. The JR Pass also includes free seat reservations.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
