Hi!

We will be heading to Japan in one month and need some help! We'll be landing at HIJ on Nov.5 and then will head straight to Onomichi. We will then head to Hiroshima the next day after riding the Shinamani Kaido. On Nov.6, we will stay in Okoyama after exploring Hiroshima, then ride the Kibi Bike trail, see Himeji Castle, before spending one or two nights in Osaka. This is where we need some help deciding if we should stay another night in Kyoto, or head a bit further. I'd really like to find ryokan with an onsen, so am considering making our way to Hakone for the night of Nov.10 but am not sure if this makes sense. We plan on spending Nov.11 and 12 in Tokyo as we fly out of Narita on the 13.

Any advice on how to plan the second half of our trip? Also, I think we only need a 7-day JR pass, but if that's the case, I'm not sure when to use it for this itinerary to get the best value out of it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello there,

Onsen can be found all over Japan, you could stay at Kyoto (for instance around Kurama) or Kobe (Arima Onsen). Go up north a bit from Kyoto, to Kinosaki-Onsen or try Hakone. All are viable options.

As for the JR Pass, I would first finalise your travel plan and then decide on the JR Pass. However do keep the option of the JR Pass in mind, as you can basically go anywhere. Once you have your trip penned out, use [the JR Fare Calculator] to see how much you can save using the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
