7 day pass - Best way to see Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima...and between?

Hello,
I will spend just over 2 weeks in Japan, from 11/23 to 12/9/13. I will stay with a friend in Tokyo for the 1st week and head to Kyoto/Osaka area on 11/29/13, at which time I will activate my JR 7-day Pass. I am trying to figure out the best itinerary using the pass from 11/29-12/6.
Can you perhaps recommend a path that includes Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima? I was thinking I could spend the first weekend in Kansai exploring Kyoto/Osaka/Nara. I would take the bullet train from Osaka on Monday 12/2. At this point, I was hoping for suggestions for the next stop. Would it be best to go straight to Hiroshima and do a day trip to Miyajima? That would mean leaving Hiroshima on 12/4. Can you recommend any additional destinations to spend the remaining days before returning to Tokyo? Is it worth getting down to Fukuoka/Beppu/Nagasaki? Are there interesting places worth stopping in between the cities I mentioned?
Thanks for any advice!
SJ

Hi there!

Basically the going from Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka - Hiroshima is one route. I've added the places to a map for you so you can get an idea of distances involved. The blue line is the Shinkansen, on which you will be traveling the most.

Personally I love a visit to Hiroshima, the city has surprisingly much to offer and Miyajima is one of the most famous places in Japan. The city center is also great for shopping or just to let go of some steam. After Hirsoshima you could head to Kyushu but remember that it is going futher away from Tokyo and you will have to travel back at some point.

You could head to the Japanese alps area had visit places such as Kanazawa, Takayama or maybe Matsumoto. This way you already travel a little back to Tokyo but on a different route. Other interesting stops directly on the Shinkansen include Kurashiki, Himeji and maybe a stop over at Nagoya.

I hope this gives you some ideas!

Hi Daniel,
Thank you so much for you quick reply and advice. I think I will stick to the Shinkansen and continue down to Kyushu to visit Fukuoka and Beppu. (Even if I head back on day 7 of my pass, I can make it up to Tokyo in 5-6 hours it seems.) If you have any thoughts on gems in these areas, I'd appreciate your ideas! I was thinking of this combo: Kyoto/Nara, Hiroshima/Miyajima, and Fukuoka/Beppu. Are there any must-see sights or day trip adventures in these areas?
Thanks again,
SJ

That sounds like a good start! Something you could add when you are around Hiroshima is a visit to Iwakuni which is a very beautiful area. In Hiroshima I would include a visit to the peace museum and peace memorial park.

In Fukuoka a pretty nice place is the historic village of Dazaifu. Also a day trip visit to Aso san is a possibility (the train ride is especially nice).

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
