Wondering i you can tell me if a 21 day rail pass is too much for my itinerary.

Arrive
Sept 20 late evening - Narita Express - Tokyo - Sugamo

Sept 21 - Sept 30 Base in Tokyo and see all the sights plus travel out to see:Nikko, Yokohama, Chiba, Izu, Mt Fuji, Disney, Kawagoe, Kamakura etc....
Or any other suggestions.

Sept30 travel to Osaka.

Sept 30 - Oct11 Base in Osaka and see all sights plus Kyoto (possibly going to Kyoto a few times), Nara, USJ, Hiroshima, Kobe, Himeji Castle, Okayama, Ise, Enrhukuji, Hikone and Nagahama etc....

Oct11 travel from Osaka to Tokyo to catch late evening flight.

Can you please advise if buying a 21 day JR pass is worth it? Do you think I will need to buy any other passes/tickets?

Out for the places I listed, is there any that is not worth it or is there any that you think I should see.

We are a family of 4, 2 kids (7yrs and 14yrs).

Any help and ideas will greatly be appreciated.

Konnichiwa Veneeta,

I think the 21 day JR Pass will work very well for your itinerary. You'll get great value out of it with all the day trips planned in and the JR Pass will cover by far the greater share of your travels.

You may still require local travel, such as around Mt. Fuji. However this will be minor and I don't think you'll require any other pass.

I also recommend adding a visit to Miyajima (near Hiroshima) and you could also include a visit to Kinosaki-Onsen if you would like to experience a Japanese Onsen bath or Ryokan stay.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for your quick reply. It has been helpful to know that I am on the right track and that the JR pass will be invaluable.

One other question:
I have realised that September 22 is the Autumn Equinox, a public holiday is Japan. Can you tell m what this means? Will everything be closed on that day? Will public transport be running?

Thank you once again :)

Most stores are open on public holidays and transportation is also running.

It just means that more people will be out to enjoy themselves. This can result in long queues at tourist attractions and busy long distance trains.
