21 DAY OR 7 DAY PASS?

Hi

We will be landing in Tokyo Haneda and will be in Japan for 15 days. Im not sure if we are better buying a 7 day rail pass and then buying the additional journeys or to pay more and get the 21 day pass even through we will probably be only using it for 10 days.

Here is the movements of when we will be using trains, Im not sure if all are going to be covered by the JRPASS?

(03/04/2016) - Tokyo Haneda - Tokyo Ginza area - Day trip to Nagano - Tokyo - Osaka - Day trip to Nara - Osaka - Day trip to Kobe- Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Tokyo - Tokyo Haneda (17/04/2016)

So far I can see we will also need to get a train from Shin Osaka to Osaka train station for our hotel.

Is there not an option to buy a 10 day pass as seems a waste to buy 21 day if only using it half of that.

Thanks

Regards

Cliff

Sorry, I meant to write 14 DAY PASS no 21 DAY PASS on my question.

So is it better for 14 day pass for my itinerary even though I will be using trains for only 10 days?

Thanks

Hello there,

The JR Pass is best used when traveling around Japan using the Shinkansen. As you know, it is valid for either 7,14 or 21 days. This does not mean that you have to use it everyday in order to make savings with it. For instance, a 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka, so even with 2 days worth of travel a 7 day JR Pass can be worth purchasing.

In the above itinerary, the most expansive travel is Tokyo - Nagano and Tokyo - Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Tokyo. If you can cover these routes, than you can make very good savings with a 14 days JR Pass, even if you don't use it everyday.

The 14 day JR Pass is about the same price as normal tickets Tokyo - Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Tokyo, so at the very least, you get the trip to Nagano for free with a 14 day JR Pass!

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for the advice.

Is it wise to buy a rail pass now? We will be travelling April 2016.

Or should we wiat until closer to the date?

Hi Cliff,

The JR Pass can be used up to 90 days after purchase.

So what a little while longer for now :)
