20 days in Japan - JR Pass needed

Hi, first timer traveling to Japan May 2016 for 20 days with the following itinerary:

5/12 - Arrive Tokyo fly directly to Hiroshima
5/13 - Hiroshima to Miyajima
5/14 - Hiroshima to Kyoto
5/20 - Kyoto to Takayama
5/23 - Takayama-Kanazawa
5/26 - Kanazawa to Karuizawa
5/28 - Karuizawa to Tokyo
6/1 - Fly home

Should I get the 14 day JR Pass or is buying individual tickets the best way to go? I calculated a total plus or minus (more on the plus side) of $366 USD using Hyperdia. Can I use the JR Pass for a day trip to Nara? Also can it be used within Tokyo getting to the different areas? I'm so overwhelmed trying to find the best options of getting around.

Thanks in advance,
jdc

Hi there fellow traveler,

Hiroshima - Miyajima 1,180 (return)
Hirshima - Kyoto ¥ 11,670
Kyoto - Takayama ¥ 9,960
Takayama Kanazwa ¥ 4,950
Kanazawa - Karuizawa ¥ 11,440
Karuizawa - Tokyo ¥ 5,910

For a total of ¥ 45,110 while this is about the same price as a 14 day JR Pass, you'll take more than 14 days to travel this route. Therefor I recommend buying normal ticket during or travel, unless you plan to include a side trip or two somewhere. Travel to Nara is included in the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel, thank. Your amount is about what I came up with and it didn't seem like the pass was a good option. I'm not planning on any other side trip other than what I posted. An additional question, what would be the best pass for Kyoto and Tokyo since I'll be spending more time in both destinations?

Thanks again!

Hi again!

For local travel in Tokyo/Kyoto, the best option is to look at day passes. In Tokyo there is the Tokyo Metro day pass while there is a 500yen bus pas in Kyoto.
