QUESTIONS:

1st Q: Coming from Kytoto area, are we best going to Matsumoto area first then Hakone then Nikko OR from Kyoto area to Hakone, the Matsumoto area then Nikko?

2nd Q: Also, can you provide some advice on a good spot to spend one night (maybe a onsen location on route) from Kyoto before we head north on March 8th? Or would you suggest adding another day to something or somewhere else?

3rd: Can you provide some suggestions for Matsumoto area? Are we best basing ourselves here? or can we easily get from Takayama to Matsumoto in March. ? then continue our travels? here are some of the things we would like to see. We would like to minimise travel in order to enjoy some hikes ect

Central Honshu Area - Mastumoto/Takayam (btw) Kainsai area which include Kyoto and Tokyo )

-Chubu Region http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1104.htmlhttp://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1104.html

Yudanaka Onsen - monkeyshttp://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6024.htmlhttp://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6024.html / http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6024.html

Greatly appreciate your input.

Thank you

Hello Heide,

1.) I would ticket with the route as you have it penned out. This makes the most sense and does not involve unnecessary travel.

2.) It is hard to find a good Onsen directly on this route. One stop that comes to mind in Gero-Onsen. It is a nice Onsen town north of Nagoya.

3.) I would visit Takayama before going to Matsumoto. There is a full mountain range between both cities and travel takes pretty long between them. Takayma is also easy to combine with Gero-Onsen. From Matsumoto it is easy to access the Nagano region. Think of Nagano city, Yudanaka and Jigokudani. be sure to review travel you plan to do in the Japanese Alps, as routes can take a long time and are complicated at times.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
