Hello Explore Japan,

Thank you having this website, nice work.

Can you please comment on our 16 days plan:
1. Arriving Kensai airport March 20th night. Would it be better to take a hotel near the airport or in mid Osaka?
2. Going to mount Koya, spending the night there. March 21st.
3. On the morning, going to Nara and the night again in Osaka/Kensai. First day activating 14 days JR pass. March 22nd.
4. Hiroshima for one night. 23/3.
5. Kyoto for 3 nights.24-26/3.
6. Takayma and Shirakawago, two nights in Takayama.27-28/3.
7. a) To Hakone, 2 nights, 29-30/3. or b) Tokyo.29/3-4/4 and during this time one day and night trip to Hakone and one day trip to Niko.
8. a)Tokyo 31/3-4/4 and during this time one day trip to Niko.
9. April 4th by JR (14th day) to Narita.

We are going to have our loggage in 2 medium size trollys and two light back packs. Could you advise a better idea?

Best Regards

Moshe

Hi Moshe,

First of all, I think it is a lovely travel plan and everything is planned very well. So here's what I can add to it:

1.) What time do you arrive at Kansai Airport? If you can leave to airport before 23.00, it is still possible to travel to Osaka, late check-ins are usually until 01:00. Otherwise a hotel near the Airport is recommended.

2.) The trip between Kyoto and Takayama, especially the wide-view train that rides from Nagoya is very nice, so don't forget to keep your camera handy.

3.) At your 7th bullet point, I would go for plan a.) This because you have a bit more time to enjoy the majestic view of Fuji and the nature around it but don't forget to visit Nikko either!

4.) For you luggage: I think 2 trolly's and small backpacks are fine and will be great when on the train, still if you plan to walk a lot with all your luggage maybe 2 big backpacks are better with a small one during day trip.

5.) You are more than good to go, so have a great, amazing, lovely and magnificent trip!

Best Regards,
Daniel

Dear Daniel -san,

Thank you very much, we realy wish our trip will be successful.

We will land at Kansai airport on 2100. Will we succeed to leave before 2300?

Regards,

Moshe

Dear Moshe,

Yes that should be fine, I have flown a couple of times to Kansai Airport and everything (including customs and baggage collection) should take about 40 minutes, depending on the amount of other passengers.

When you book a Hotel in Osaka, just make sure that they allow late check-ins, always all Hotels in Japan do, it's just good to be sure though!

For the rest:
Have a great trip!
-Daniel

Dear Daniel,

Thank you so much. I would like to learn more: Is it possible to arrange exact JR time table from abroad and getting the tickets, or the only possibility is on first usage in Japan?

Are any transportation benefits to senior citizens?

Regards

Moshe

Dear Moshe,

You can start making reservations the moment that you exchange your voucher for the actual pass. For this you will have to be in Japan. However you can make reservations for the period that you travel if you exchange the pass and put the first day of use on a day in the future.

There are special priority seats for senior citizen and persons that otherwise might need them. These are available on buses, local trains and other trains that don't allow for seat reservations. Sometimes senior discounts for local attractions are available too.

Best regards,
Daniel
