Hi,

We are taking our first trip to Japan June 27th -July 11th. (3 adults)

The goal is to travel using the JR Green Pass as much as possible. However, I am struggling to understand the rail system and figure out the actual schedule times using Hyperdia. Also, we need to make the most out of the pass but I am noticing that some of the trains we wanted to take are not covered by the JR Green Pass.

Here is our schedule, we appreciate the help very much:

Monday, June 29th
6:15pm- our plane lands in Osaka
7:30pm - depart Osaka to Tokyo ( We cannot figure our what trains or schedule for this) Also, can we get our passes immediately upon arrival?

Tuesday, June 30th
5am- Day Trip Tokyo to Nikko and back to Tokyo ( what train should we take? I noticed the direct train is not covered by the JR Pass)

Friday, July 3rd
5am- Depart Tokyo to Kamakura
5pm - Depart Kamakura to Hakone

Saturday, July 4th
8pm or later: depart Hakone to Mt. Fuji ( planning to climb over-night and descend in the morning)

Sunday, July 5th
3pm: Depart Mt Fuji area to Kyoto

Tuesday, July 7th
Early Day trip to Naara

Wednesday, July 8th
5pm: Depart Kyoto to Hiroshima

Thursday, July 9th
7pm Depart Hiroshima to Osaka

Will the JR Green Pass pay off on our trip? My worry is that I cannot seem to find a clear schedule of the trains and it is already a very expensive pass to get stuck paying for additional train tickets.

Please assist, we really appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Raquel

Hello Raquel,

There's plenty of travel in your itinerary and you can make very good savings with the 14 day JR Pass. Let's start with your arrival. Kansai Airport opens at 5:30, so you can exchange the JR Pass right away and start traveling. Then take the Haruka Express to Shin-Osaka and from there the bullet train to Tokyo station. The route looks something like this.

Then for Tokyo, take the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and from there the JR Nikko line to Nikko.

You seem to have some problem working out Hyperdia. Have a look at our planning with Hyperdia article, then let me know if anything remains unclear.

A note on Greenclass, it is available on Shinkansen and most limited express trains. Local train such as found in Tokyo or the JR Nikko line between Utsunomiya and Nikko don't have Green Seats. Still it's the long hauls where it really matters and you'll be able to use it.

Also important is that there's no JR transport near to Fuji, you'll have to use other transport to travel the area. Such as the bus to Fuji firth station.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
