Hello there,

I see that you've already made a nice itinerary and I'll be happy to help you get the best out of it.

1.) A 7 day JR Pass would suit your itinerary well, given that you could cover Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Osaka with it. Any additional travel is also nice but this route is the most important, because it is the most expansive without a JR Pass. I would personally stay in Hiroshima, Miyajima is a great visit but it is somewhat small and I think you'll have more to experience when you stay in Hiroshima. Don't miss Miyajima though, as it is one of the best visits in Japan and you could easily make a side trip from Hiroshima to it.

2.) It is indeed possible to visit Koya-san from Hiroshima. The route is Hiroshima - Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen, then a local train to Shin-Imamiya or Namba and from there the Nankai express to Gokurakubashi from where you can use a ropeway to Koya-san. The JR Pass covers all but the Nankai Express and the ropeway. Here you can use a Koya heritage ticket.

3.) The short answer is: that the JR Pass can be used for part of the way to Fuji. We have a detailed page on how to visit Fuji here, including how to best use the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

It is about 2H from Osaka - Koya-san all together. You may as well travel on from Hiroshima if you are traveling already. At least that is what I would do :)

we'll buy 7 day JR PASS for our trip and perhaps activate it as we leave tokyo going to kyoto. if we buy SUICA IC pass will it cover our train trips going around Tokyo, kyoto and osaka?

Yes! You can use Suica for local travel and companies not covered by the JR Pass.
