14 DAY RAILWAY PASS WORTH IT OR...?

Hi all,

Could you please help me with figuring out whether a JR railway pass would be worth buying for my Japan trip or not.
A JR pass is around AUD500.

If I arrive in Tokyo and am leaving through Osaka with day trips from Tokyo to nearby places and visiting Kyoto and possibly Hiroshima, would the JR railway pass be a good investment?

Or where would I need to visit in order for it to be worth? Any good places to visit?

Thanks in advance,

Ellene.

Hi Ellene,

A 7 day JR Pass would be worth considering if you use it to cover Tokyo - Osaka - Hiroshima - Osaka with it. This will give you good savings and make the investment well worth it.

In other words, if you do visit Hiroshima go with the JR Pass. You can also use the JR Pass to use the ferry from Hiroshima to the close by Miyajima and the Hiroshima sightseeing bus. If you are not familiar with Miyajima, it is one of the most iconic places in Japan and one I certainly would not miss.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hey Daniel

Thank you so much for your reply and advice.

If I take day trips to Hakone, Mount Fuji, Kawago, Nara, etc.

Would it be then be a good investment to buy the 14 day pass?

Miyajima looks amazing, thank you for this tip. I would not have found out about this place by myself.

Hi Ellene,

Hakone is directly on the route from Tokyo - Osaka and Nara is very close by Osaka. Visiting them would not add a lot in ticket prices and it would not be economic to go for a 14 day JR Pass. My advise would be to stick with a 7 day JR Pass visit Hakone on the route from Tokyo and visit Nara as a day trip from Osaka after the pass expires, this would be a more economic way of traveling.

Hope this helps too,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Sorry for the late reply.
If I were to go from Tokyo to Hakone and back for a day trip.
Then when I get to Osaka, go to Nara and Kyoto as further fay trips
Would it be economical to get a 7 day pass and use it for my trips from Tokyo to Osaka, and return trips from Nara and Kyoto to Osaka?

Thanks,

Ellene.

And also use it for the Hakone trip as well with the other trips mentioned above.
