Hello
I am seriously considering the 14 day pass but just want to double check it is worth it for my plans next March - I know that some routes have restrictions like Osaka to Koya, and Hiroshima to Fukuoka (slower trains only).

I am planning to active the pass on day 5 - Tokyo to Kanazawa

1 Friday 20th March - Arrive Narita AM

2 Sat 21st Tokyo day
3 Sun 22nd Tokyo
4 Mon 23rd - Tokyo - potentially Nikko day trip

5 Tue 24th - Kanazawa (will the new Hokuriku line be open and eligible to use my pass on? I heard it nearly halves the travel time)

6 Wed 25th Osaka
7 Thur 26th Mt Koya
8 Fri 27th Osaka
9 Sat 28th Nara
10 Sun 29th Himeji

11 Mon 30th Travel to Hiroshima via Osaka

12 Tue 31st Fukuoka day trip, back to Hiroshima

13 Wed 1st Hiroshima then to on to arimaonsen pm via Kobe

14 Thur 2nd on to Kyoto (30 mins from Shin-Kobe station?)

15 Fri 3rd Kyoto

16 Sat 4th Kyoto

17 Sun 5th Kyoto morning, back to Tokyo late pm (2 hrs journey)

18 Mon 6th Tokyo

19 Tue 7th - Tokyo

20 Wed 8th - AM Flight from Narita

many thanks!

Hi there,

The 14 day JR Pass would be gold here! We don't know what Tokyo - Kanazawa will cost with the new Shinkansen line but all Shinkansen on the Hokuriku line to Kanazawa are covered!

The JR Pass will also cover most of your travels, expect for the last part to Koya-san but this is really minor compared to the rest.

It looks like a very nice itinerary, let me know if there's anything I can help you with!

Hello Daniel
thanks for your reply.

Just to confirm, if I started using my 14 day JR pass on the 4th day (for my Nikko day trip), would I be able to use it up until the end of the day on the 17th day (coming back from Kyoto)?

Up until now I have been assuming that it is 14 days exactly - so if I activated it at 1pm on the 4th day, it would expire at 1pm on the 17th day..... but I read just now it doesn't expire until midnight of the 17th day. That is great if so, as I can use it for my Nikko trip rather than activating it the day later.

Could you confirm either way? I'd hate to be stranded in Kyoto not able to use my JR pass, having wasted it on an otherwise cheap Nikko day trip by activating it too early!!

The JR pass covers travel from the start of train service on the first day (usually about 6:00 a.m) up till about midnight on the last day so given the itinerary you describe then you're covered for the trip back to Tokyo from Kyoto on Sunday 17th even if you start your 14-day pass on Monday 4th.

Just remember you can't use the Nozomi, just the Hikari and Kodama services on the Sanyo shinkansen so the trip from Kyoto to Tokyo will take about 2h45m. I think the last Hikari service that terminates in Tokyo leaves Kyoto around 8:30 p.m.

It's worth noting that the JR pass will also give you free travel on the Kyoto JR bus service as well as the Hiroshima sighteseeing loop buses, saving you a few extra yen to spend on Osaka ramen and Hiroshima okonimayaki.

Hi again!

@cwest, Sorry I just got the notification that someone posted in this topic and I see that I had not yet replied to your question. Nojay however posted a great answer!

Just to confirm, the JR Pass is counted in full days and the first day is counted as a full day. The JR Pass will then expire on the last day at midnight. In other words, you don't have to worry about the JR Pass expiring mid day.

Again sorry for the late replay and awesome work Nojay!
-Daniel
